I thought that the coaches held back the team with it's offensive play calling today as they tried to work on the running game. Bray could have thrown for 600 yards today if they chose to let him rip it all over the field. In other words, it was almost as if it were a controlled scrimmage. While we want to run the football, make no mistake that with our current backs and our offensive scheme, we will not be mistaken for a power running football team. We just do not have that back that can take over a game on the ground. Neal runs to straight up. Young and Watson are too small, and Lane just does not have the speed. We lack someone with a forward lean running style in a slasher mode. We will address this in the 2013 recruiting class. Bray was sharp as a tack, as were our WRs and TE. Georgia State had no answer for any of them. Defensively, I was disappointed in the big plays that we allowed. We gambled and lost too many times today. Does anyone see us bringing the house and vacating the middle against Florida like we did Georgia State? I do not see that happening, so it may not be anything to worry about. What I would worry about defensively is our tackling. We reverted back to missed tackles at our jack linebacker spot and safety play today. Michael Palardy laid a giant on the field today.

Yeah, we reverted back to sloppy tackling but we played a lot of 3rd stringers and walk-ons. According to stats at UT Sports we play nearly 70 players today, which is the most in a long time. Lathers and Maggitt didn't play so that takes some of the crispness out of our tackling. My link to the game went out at half time. Where did you watch the game Tux? |

Meh. We just showed up, that's fine. Got a few new guys warmed up for a bit of PT against FL next week, etc. BTW: I fully expect us to bring the house and leave the middle open against Florida, because that's all we've done in the two games we've played to date w/ Sal. I just hope that we get to the QB more often when Maggitt is playing. We gave up some plays today, but this defense is going to do that every week. |

We will never be a good running team with the running scheme Chaney coaches. Every one on the planet knows we are a passing team..but our weak running game will cost us in the clutch. Watson needs to get the ball more IMO |

I watched the entire NC State game... didn't see anything from today except the video highlights on utsports.com. Translation: I don't have as accurate a read on the team as most of you right now. That said, and based upon what I've seen from Florida today - this is the first time in a long time I like the way we're set up for the Gators. In fact, I like it a lot. I think we can get to whoever they decide to start at QB, and unless we play like an old Fulmer team I don't think they can stop our passing game. Yeah, we're not going to be mistaken for a power running team but there's no reason our pass can't set up an effective running game next week to keep Florida just enough off stride. I've always been a realist with the Vols... orange and white glasses have never been surgically implanted in my head. I just think our combination of talent and swagger will take down the Gators. The swagger, in this team's case and granted it's only been two games, but... I'm sensing an expectation to do great things rather than hoping for things to go our way. There seems to be a different vibe with this group... not sure where it comes from, but there does seem to be a different feel. I believe Justin Hunter has a lot to do with it. And Mr. Patterson as well. They're not cocky, but they do seem to have a lot of what made Gators WR's in years past so good: They just expect to beat the other guy. Short, over the middle or deep. And unlike past years, we're healthy and we're playing loose. How many times have the Vols been tight as an overtuned snare drum in a huge game? I lost count after halftime of the 2001 SEC Championship Game. In any event, that's my view from Fargo. Hope all of you are doing well! Nice to be able to stop by and toss in a quick flare over the middle here on the board. Always enjoy reading everyone's thoughts here on TVO. |
