It looks like Howard and Croom will both be joining Wide Receiver U this Saturday.

I just looked at our scholarship roster ... if we lose CP and Hunter to the NFL this year, then our starters for 2013 will come out of our 4 true freshmen: Howard, Croom, Blanc, and Bowles ... and, perhaps Jacob Carter (but he would be in his 5th year, and likely graduating).

I still don't see them both going pro after this year. Could happen I guess. Vols are recruiting two or three juco wide receivers, don't know where we are right now with those players. Also, I will wait and see if Vincent Dallas makes any headway this season towards becoming a productive receiver. Bowles is gong to be a good one, book it.
Rumph and Smith.

I know that they are hard after Rumph, don't know about Smith. I read an interesting statement in Brent's Q&A page a couple of weeks ago, he said an asst coach had told him Bowles is having a hard time with the mental part of playing WR, but that he would be a great one down the road. I think maybe they are going to redshirt him to give him time to learn everything.jmo

Bowles was near a straight A student in high school so I find it difficult to believe that he is having any trouble with learning a position. Not doubting you, but Trent Tubbs is not always right 100 percent of the time. Bowles lost his throwing QB at the start of the season last year at JCS and didn't get the opportunity to catch many balls. Of course there, he just blew by people or out muscled them in his pass routes. He will be DaRick without the baggage within the next two years.
If you will recall, Smith was once verballed to Tennessee out of his high school in Ohio. Right now, I am content to just enjoy Patterson and Hunter for the next 12 games and let the pieces fall where they may. Worrying about next season is the furtherest thing from my mind at this point in time.

Yeah, Smith was once committed, but Smith is probably smelling some $$$$ down there in Mississippi right now.

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

Getting good grades and understanding football arent necessarily the same thing.

There was a really awful movie several years ago, called The Program. I'm reminded now of a scene in that movie. The all star linebacker, Mack or something, was getting tudored. The tutor was asking him all kinds of easy questions and he had no clue, I mean like the '2 + 2" type questions...really, really stupid stuff. So the tutor was getting frustrated with it. Then it cuts away to a different scene with Mack sitting in the film room, and the coaches stopping after plays to ask him what his assignment is, what the other team is doing...and he would immediately spout off very complex and accurate answers. I know that's fiction, but it's an illustration. We all know people that are 'book smart' but dont have any common sense whatsoever. Same deal here. A guy who is as dumb as a box of rocks academically may very well be able to grasp football, but a Rhodes Scholar may never be able to figure out the difference between a cover 2 and a cover 3.

Bowles was the leading receiver in the last scrimmage before they broke camp. Six catches for 90 yards. Perhaps they are asking him to learn all three positions. I live 40 miles from where he played his high school ball, he is not a dumb kid and he is not a dumb football player.

I'm not saying he's dumb. I'm just saying, that doesnt mean he isnt having a problem learning how to play WR for UT. WR is actually one of the more difficult positions on the team to grasp mentally even for smart kids. Hunter is a physical freak of nature, which is the only reason he played at all as a freshman (and even then, he only had to run like 3 routes and never had to read & check, it was always just a called route for him).

Tough to get a freshman WR to do very much in the SEC.
