1) A team with a good-to-mediocre dual threat QB will give us fits on D. 2) Maggitt is as physically talented of a defensive player as we've ever had, or at least have had in a long while. He's up there with Leonard Little in talent. 3) LBs not so great at getting into their drops. Played the run fairly well and blitzed well, but coverage is their weak point by far. 4) CP is the freak he's advertised to be. Ya'll know how good a player I think DaRick was...but to be honest, if I had to choose, CP is an upgrade. 5) Keep playing Marlin. He's kinda slow, but he is a better RB than Neal. They looked pretty much exactly like I expected them to look. I expected more points, but that's how I expect they will come. *** We should beat Florida by 2 TDs at least. We wont, but we should. PS, speaking of Florida and Muschamp. Thank you for saying no two years in a row, as you are a clown and have no clue what you are doing. |

Defensive Line was much better. Sentimore is a beast, Couch is good....and I'm not sure on McCullers yet (meaning I'm not sure how long he can play at a relatively high level in any given game. 20+ plays a game...not yet, but he's a load). Rest are average, which is also an improvement: we actually have depth that isnt a complete liability now. They are playing much better than the last few years, too. Palermo was a huge upgrade as a DL coach over what we've had the last two years (Smith was terrible, LT wasnt in the right spot) Another thing about the DL: Maggitt was pretty badass when walking up and putting a hand on the ground. I'm not sure on Sal as a DC yet, but he sure did a good job of scheming people into a position to make plays. Somthing else I forgot to mention but noticed. We tackled really, really well. Best I've seen in a while. Defense as a whole seemed to be well coached. They were a bit lost on occasion, but I think that reflects on them just not quite getting the system yet rather than fundamental issues. Brewer's hit was as textbook of a form tackle as I have ever seen. That hit was just nasty, cant believe the guy held on to the ball. |

We left at least 14 points on the field (maybe 21). We had a TO left at the end of the first half that the sidelines or Bray should have used, it does you no good to eat it. Hunter should definitely should have caught the deep ball that hit him in the hands and was a sure run in for a TD in the second half. There were other missed opportunities, but it was the first game and overall they played well. |

Sal is a great addition at DC. Going back to wavy chavy, we have always had issues with adjusting our scheme to whatever our opponent was doing on offense, especially if it was successful, i.e. - scoring points on us. Sal definitely adjusted throughout the game and especially in the second half. I hope we don't live & die by the big play this year, but they are exciting to watch and are great at getting a waning crowd back into the game. |

That is what stood out to me the most. REALLY sound tackling skills ... I hope that wasn't an aberration. |

The big difference to me on tackling is that we didn't try to blow anybody up unless we had a straight on shot...and even then we wrapped up pretty well. The only time we didn't that I recall was Gordon's hit on the punt return where he about knocked him out of his shoes. It use to drive me nuts when we'd pop them and have them bounce off and keep going. |

Whether it was a good play or not, the replay clearly showed that Bray broke the plane of the goal line before he lost possession of the ball. Hunter is not going to drop very many balls right in his bread basket. All talking heads, and all negatron fans thought Tennessee would lose this game. It is an opener to be celebrated and team has two weeks to prepare for Florida. My guess is that they are working some on Florida this week, secretly of course, so that the azzclowns in the media can't blog it all over the internet. Great adjustments by Sal and his eyes in the sky, Conklin and Staley, at halftime. Moore looked like the guy that Pete Carroll recruited out of high school in the Peoples Republic of Californication. McCullers probably played less in the second half as the Vols went more with a pass rush package with State trying to play catch up. Not worried about him at all, he is going to be a difference maker. Good to see Palardy nail two field goals, he's healthy and that makes a huge, huge difference. Like what Charlie Coiner is doing with special teams. Putting Bullard at tight end to block was a smart move. Teague had a great game at one corner and Waggner looks very much at home back at corner. Fugate only had one tackle, but ran to and was around the ball plenty. Sapp was very active, looked like he belonged on the field as a reserve at linebacker. As I stated before the game, Fulton is a bulldozer and he had a big outing, grading out best among the offensive linemen. Tiny's learning curve continues and he will be better this week and next than he was last week. Grade job by all the coaches and I would give them a solid A in this game. |

I give the coaches a B for the following reasons. They ran Neal too many time up the gut and watched him run out of bounds in lieu of being physical. Lane should have been inserted earlier. Dooley should have called a timeout just prior to the Bray fumble, poor clock management, and there were too many receivers running loose for NC State early in the game due to alignment problems. Oh I forgot, the Bray quarterback sneak, just when did Bray show that he could effectively run that play? NEVER? For that yard, put in double tights and challenge your line to get that yard. They also ran a slow developing play in the same series that should never be called in the red zone. |

Offense - 1st game - still in the gun slinging mode. CP is one bad boy - and will do well. TE which will be a need against better defenses. RB's can't say much at this stage - as NCSU has a horrible front 7. Defense - going after the QB at NCSU was the plan - and it showed. Focusing on NSCU's O-line, well they were abused. Florida - lets see how things turn out in Collie Station. The Aggies defense isn't much better than NCSU's if at all. If they can stop, or at least slow down the Gator Sr RB at home - that bodes well for Tennessee. Tennessee has to RTDB vs the Gators, effectively - I suspect the secondary play from the Gators will be at tad bit better than NCSU. Florida sticks to the penalty game, as they did in their opener - they'll lose a lot of ball games. |

It was nice to have a DC who made adjustments at halftime and as a result we played better. Offense has done this, they just haven't had the players or QB to execute it. Dooley made a comment about finally leaving Eric Gordon in one place, that spoke to me. Also, Doug Matthews talked about Waggoner finally getting to play CB where he excels. Both comments said something to me about maybe being able to get the right players in the right place may be better with current staff. |

Waggoner playing CB doesn't really have to do with the current coaching staff. It has been stated for years that he has always excelled at CB and was pedestrian at safety, but we've had such depth issues over the last couple of years that our best overall defensive scheme meant that Waggoner needed to play at safety. More to the point, if Waggoner hadn't played at safety last year, we would end up playing a walk-on (Nick Guess) back there. Edited by OrangeRev, Sep 5 2012, 12:14 PM.

they were going to save for a FG, but we fumbled on the QB sneak. We mis-managed out TO's because of substitution problems on defense. That's when Dooley went into to Sal's huddle and pissed him off. Dooley is wound tight as shit, and I don't blame him. He's lost two ball games at Tennessee AFTER the coaches post game handshake. I had never seen it once in my 36 years of playing and watching football, much less twice, so I understand DD being on edge. However, I hope his sideline meltdowns become less frequent as we improve our in game administration. |

One more time and then I'm done with this NCST game. Tennessee won the game. Talking heads and many writers said they would lose. It's OK to celebrate a win and not nit pick the shitzz out of it after the fact. On some of the Neal runs, they had a stretch play called where he is supposed to bounce it outside. All those plays were not called for up the middle runs. If the Bray play had been called a touchdown, there would be no moaning and groaning about it now. He tried to go in behind the SEC's offensive lineman of the week, Zach Fulton. The ball broke the plane of the goal line before he lost it. Just because the refs missed the call does not make it a bad play. Tennessee won by two touchdowns and was obviously the better football team. This is something to be considered a very positive development. Frankly it is a good thing that the kids didn't play a perfect game. It gives the coaches things to work on in practice and prevents the kids from getting over-confident and content. This football program has climbed out of a very deep hole and can compete now. That is really all that I personally am concerned about. |
