2 Alton Howard WR 5-8 185 FR Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS
3 Tyler Drummer WR 6-1 172 JR Powell, Tenn./Powell/Univ. of Cumberlands
7 Drae Bowles WR 6-0 202 FR Jackson, Tenn./Jackson Christian HS
9 Sam Cranford WR 6-4 189 FR Nashville, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian Academy
11 Justin Hunter WR 6-4 200 JR Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes
18 Jason Croom WR 6-5 232 FR Norcross, Ga./Norcross HS
36 Cody Blanc WR 6-3 202 FR Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Central
80 Dylan West WR 6-1 186 JR Oneida, Tenn./Oneida
83 Zach Rogers WR 6-0 172 SR Nashville, Tenn./David Lipscomb
84 Cordarrelle Patterson WR 6-3 205 JR Rock Hill, S.C./Northwestern HS/Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C.
87 Jacob Carter WR 6-0 180 JR Nashville, Tenn./Ensworth

This is the Vols updated WR corps.

As you can see, there is a lot of youth on this list of players. You have to believe that Cody Blanc will get a chance to step up soon, as will Jason Croom and Drae Bowles. Pig Howard may see more important action sooner than later when he returns.

Pig will be in the rotation @ slot by Florida, assuming he doesnt get hurt.

That's where I imagined him to be the very first time I saw his highlights reel. Kinda in the Wes Welker role.

We have 2 current WRs that have caught a pass in D1 football.....Hunter and ZRo...OUCH!!

Meh, that's a tad bit overly simplistic. One of those two is exceptionally talented (though his durability may be an issue), and we also have a reliable TE and several backs who are good in the passing game. And the WR's we have that have NOT caught a pass in D1 are also very talented, one of them being a JC transfer rather than a true freshman.

Call me crazy, but I'm not exactly ready to take a header off a cliff just yet.

That is the nature of college football and max of 4 years playing career. You have to make changes and insert new players.

The fact that we have Hunter coming back takes a lot of the pressure off. Still he has to show himself that his knee is ready to go 100% in his own mind.

Who's jumping off a cliff? I was just stating a fact. Sure we have some good young talent that will be good we HOPE. But they haven't done it yet.

I am tired of all the Da'prick drama and glad he's gone but the fact is we do not have much experience behind Hunter right now. I hope CP is a world beater but he's got to prove it against SEC D1 defenses. Just the facts.

As I said, this is college football, where you turn over you entire roster every 4 years. Change is part of the landscape.

There is rarely ever much ready to play experience behind any of the players. They don;t get experience until they get baptized under fire.

As far as Patterson, he does not have anything to prove to in order for the team to be confident n his abilities. Bray and the staff know what he is capable of doing and they have full confidence in him and his abilities.

You are tired of all the drama from DaRick. I'd agree with that. I'm also tired of so many Tennessee fans being such pessimistic wimps. The majority of the fan base is so beat down (and rightfully so, frankly) that there is just this aura of negativity that surrounds everything.

Teams are still going to have to decide who to double up on, when they face UT. Somebody is going to be open for big plays on virtually every play.

We brought in what many believed to be the top WR recruiting class in the nation in February. Now we have Pig and Croom dealing with injuries, but they will come around. Until then, we can play Blanc, Carter, and Zero in the slot and run Bowles in as back to either wide out.

Don't forget about Devrin Young. Bray again talked about going through his progressions today and Young will certainly be a viable option in the short range game. Bray called it touchdown to checkdown and said that is what Coach Chaney preaches. And again, Neal can catch the ball, he proved that last November.
I'm still predicting that Drae Bowles will be DaRick without the baggage and bad attitude.

Things are settling down a day later. The team is at peace with what took place and are a tighter group as a result.

Things have changed in how teams will defend us. We will no longer almost automatically face a nickel or dime defense. Teams will mix it up and challenge our slot guys and Rivera. Thats good, because they too can and will burn the defenses.

We still have the two most athletic receivers in the nation. I pity the poor corner who has to be on an island covering the guy that the defense chooses to solo cover on.

Not necessarily Tux. It's not certianly automatic, no. But we did get the best WR class in the country last year. I dont expect any of them to be able to play really close to Rogers' level, but it's not outside the realm of possiblity that a couple of them may combine to be threats from the slot. Pig is a dynamic athlete, and Blanc is a big kid with good hands.

Losing DaRick sucks, but its not like we dont have other talented bodies. Plus: our backs are all very good receivers underneath....and in any event, we still have (IMO) 2 of the best WRs in the country.

Here's some guesses. NCST may have Amerson shadow Hunter at the start of the game. They will use the free safety to cover over the top for the field corner which may put the boundary corner in a one on one. However, if they play zone exclusively then their safeties aren't going to be able to creep up into the box to support their run defense. They allowed an average of 132 yards per game rushing last season against a questionable schedule. That was with the three linebackers who departed after last season and a three year starter at defensive tackle who is also gone. Their pass defense was even worse despite that gaudy interception number. They were a paltry 61st in the nation in pass defense, allowing an average of 224 yards per game, again despite all those picks.
You might be surprised to learn that Tennessee was 12th in the country in pass defense despite guys playing out of position, playing hurt (Waggner and Teague) and playing freshmen, Coleman and Randolph.

I really like Tennessee's chances to be able to dictate and impose its will on this NCST defense. If they want to play soft, I think the Vols burn them with the run and short throws to Rivera, Young, Neal, Blanc. If they want to play tight, Patterson and or Hunter burns them over the top.
And as the above numbers suggest, the Vols' secondary has been maligned by naysayers this spring and summer. The same guys who were No. 12 nationally are back, healthy, a year older, a year stronger and a year wiser. Plus, I feel they will have a pass rush to help them out this season.

You can bet all the cotton in Crockett County that Drae Bowles will NEVER show his ass like Da'Prick....and I'm hoping he's at least 90% the player Da'Prick was...Bowles is a good kid that came from good stock. All-American type kid.
