Have to admit, this one got my me. Very quietly last winter, Coach Dooley added veteran NFL scout Bill Baker to the staff as NFL coordinator for the players. Impressive move indeed.
Excerpt from Rivals (Volquest)
From a post by FlaVols
I had no idea but CDD has hired a new staff member - Vols NFL Coordinator. Former Vol Bill Baker was hired after scouting for the NFL for over 20 years. I am really impressed with the infrastructure Dooley has built. Here is a little excerpt from TOS...
"Let me just start with this. So many college coaches say, 'We don't want you thinking about the NFL until you are done.' But then they turn around and they are recruiting sophomores and juniors in high school. So where is the hypocrisy," Dooley said. "So I tell the players we want you to think about college as a (high school) junior, but we don't want you to think think about the NFL as a junior? It's not right. It's a dream and it's a good dream. I believe that the better educated that they are on the process then the better they will perform. Bill is here to provide that education for them in so many areas. Starting with do you come out as a junior or not. You can't make that decision without very good data. Then its if you don't come out or if you are going into your third year what's the insurance implications. How does all that work to protect myself? Then it's how do I pick an agent? What do I look for? How do I do this? How do I manage this process for my family? What are the rules that could get me in trouble as far as eligibility and compliance? Then how do I prepare for the combine? Where do I stack up relative to my competitors? There's so many things that go on in this dream that can provide a lot of external clutter that can hamstring their performance. I think the more comfort level that they have knowing that they have the right information then the better they will perform for Tennessee and the better equipped they will be for the NFL process."Helping them perform better for Tennessee is a daily task for Baker. He's yet to miss a single snap of practice. He spends each day stalking the practice field taking notes. Notes on players work ethic, attitude, attentiveness. The next morning, Baker logs hours in the film room watching that practice from every camera angle taking notes. Notes that turn into written reports that are available to the head coach anytime he wants them."I have written an NFL report on every player on the team. I gave it to coach Dooley for him to do with it what he wants to with it," Baker said. "It's beneficial because he can use it to show a player what an NFL scout said about you as a sophomore and what your chances were. They all want to play in the NFL. They are here to get their education and enjoy college life, but the dream is to play in the NFL and make that money. Let's help everyone of them have a chance if they want to work for it."

Yeah, I knew it, but not any details. I had seen his picture and title show up on the coaches listing on utsports.com

Just another example of the minutia that is a trademark of Coach Dooley.
