Hearing Downs was injured in the scrimmage. If serious, we are very weak at TE. |

That makes the backup Ayers ... and, then some goober is posting that they heard he fractured his leg tonight and is out for a long time ... I hope he is just trolling. |

It is an injury to the knee cap and as some posters with a medical background have stated, he will be sidelined for a while, but will return sooner than most will realize. Some have said such an injury will sideline him 4-5 weeks. |

If I were a high school or JUCO TE, UT would be one of the first places that I would want to look into playing for. |

Ayers is in a walking boot but I don't know the extent of the problem. Bartholomew is the primary backup now. Justin King is getting work there and I believe that Meredith will be ready to go no later than the Florida game. Again, this ain't the QB position and they don't need a tight end on the field on every offensive snap. Just hope that Rivera can stay reasonably healthy for a while now until some new depth can be developed. I feel real bad for Downs, he was really coming on strong at the TE position. |

Meredith hasn't been ready to go all of 2012 ... the healing of that hamstring is one of the bigger mysteries of Knoxville right now. Perhaps he's a vegetarian like Cody Pope. |

I had a bad hamstring pull when I was playing fast pitch softball in Memphis. If you don't let it heal completely it will re=aggrevate constantly. It is my undestanding that Meredith pulled it during last season, aggrevated it during all-star game, it flared up again last winter and during the spring. He was probably close to a tear which would have required surgery. Having said that, tight end is one of the least of my worries heading into the season. As long as Rivera is not out for an extended period, that position will be fine. They are not going to even line up with a tight end sometimes. |

We have four TEs that have health issues right now? Let's see ... (1) Ayers with some sort of mysterious leg injury, (2) Downs with that knee issue, and (3) Meredith with the cursed hamstring. Who am I missing? |

He's probably talking about Rivera being held out of contact with the knee sprain. I believe that Rivera is supposed to be full speed tomorrow. |

Not good but much better than a dislocated knee or ACL. |

I guess Dooley talked to a few others about moving to tight end. Dooley said that they all said, "Hell No!". |

Some folks on another site said that this injury will sideline Downs until at least November. If that is the case, IMO, it would be good for Downs to redshirt this season. |

Agree. The only reason to play him that late is if Tennessee was in the middle of the battle for the eastern crown and Rivera was nicked up some. Otherwise, a red-shirt year would be appropriate. |
