Opinions: Is Waggner that much better than...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

everybody else at corner. It has seemed too easy for him to win his position when he's hasn't been a full time corner during his career.

The Good:
Waggner is the veteran in the secondary. He understands corner and safety positions. Also, he has shown he can make more big plays @ corner than at safety. He just seems to find the ball. He has that ideal size for the position.

The Bad and this is short:
He hasn't always played physical. He has demonstrated at best average tackling ability in the open field over his career. He does not have great speed as I've never seen him run players down.

I'm not trying to be negative but I was just wondering about the open competition because we hear about is everybody that is fighting for the other corner spot. Maybe the new and better coaching has helped everyone tremendously because we haven't consistently set the edge good in years on stretch or sweep plays. To me if we do this our defense is progressing and would show signs of being a fundamentally sound group.

Item: When Waggner was a full time corner and healthy in 2010 he had five interceptions and returned three for touchdowns. He also led the team in recovered fumbles with three. He was named second team All-SEC after the 2010 season as a corner back.
Item: Bouncing from safety to corner and back to safety last season, his production suffered. Oh, BTW, he also played almost the entire season with a separated shoulder that never healed.
Item: Waggner is a veteran player and leader who knows his position, knows coverages and won't have many busts. But, gee, the above expert really has it figured out now doesn't he?

Waggner is not just our best corner, he's probably our best playmaker on Defense period. He'll be on the field somewhere, one way or another.

He is NOT the most talented corner. He's just a gamer.

The part that really got to me was when the guy stated that Waggner had never been a full time corner. I must assume that this poster just became a fan in 2011 or he was out of the country searching for Mayan treasure in 2010.

Waggner is one of those guys that has enough talent, but plays over his ability. Like a skinny Dale Jones or something. He'll play.
