Running Backs Progress Reports

Jay Graham and Jim Chaney discussed the improved play of Rajion Neal, the talent and speed of Que, Devrin Young's toughness, even them wanting to see more wiggle from Tom Smith.

There has been very little mention of Marlin Lane, other than Chaney mentioning that Lane had a great day of practice yesterday.

I have to take that comment and in the manner that he said it, that they have not been getting what they have wanted out of Marlin Lane...or they just don't want everything to get out into the public so not to give away some very good play and progress for NC State to prepare for.

Maybe I'm overreaching and overreacting.

Who do you want to see or who do you believe we will see making a difference at running back?

What I gather from it is that Rajion is beginning to play up to his potential more than anything against Lane (Rajion has always had more talent, he just played like a wuss and could not hold on to the ball). Nothing against Lane, I just think he has not stepped up his game in the same way Neal has. Young is not surprising, he was going to be pretty much right where he is now anyway.

To be concise: the light has apparently come on for Neal, which is great news.

First, Jay Graham is 3 years overdue.

Second, I believe that we have the talent at running back on this roster - I like both Neal and Lane as running backs - but I just want to see some grit running it between the tackles, showing the ability to push a linebacker and grind out 2-3 yards. I don't like to hear that the only success we are having is bouncing it outside.

I see Lane and Neal sharing the load with Young getting the ball some on third down and on certain plays designed just for his skill set. . With three backs they all should be fresh until the final gun sounds.

Dooley discussed Marlin Lane last night. He said that Marlin Lane had a good camp at Milligan's Island. He then went on to say that Marlin has had a good camp, but Rajion Neal and Devrin Young have had even better camps.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I think Lane has been dogging it a little too much. He has the talent and he (at times) has the intensity, but he's got to have that intensity over a full practice or a full game.

Aggie you left out a couple things;

* Sophomore tailback Marlin Lane hasn't had a bad camp, Dooley said. Rather, Rajion Neal and Devrin Young have been that good to move ahead of him.

"Nobody is disappointed in Marlin,'' Dooley said.

Lane could win favor today by breaking a long run and showing that he's dependable in pass protection.

"Dependable in pass protection......"

"It's not you, it's ME" applies here.

Marlin is still Marlin, but Raijon isnt the same Raijon he has been. Neal has always had more talent than any of our other backs. If he starts playing to his potential, we are fine at RB.

You're slowly coming around when you question what Dooley really meant by his statements. There's hope for you.
