The kid is a mature-bodied strong safety, who could end up growing into a linebacker.

Wagee. Do you think the days of growing safeties to linebackers will be a lot less common as we go to a 3-4 defense?

As Tux said, Reeves-Maybin is a bigger body, more muscular than slender. Tennessee has already taken a safety and walked him down to outside linebacker on this team, Dontavius Sapp. True safeties such as Rashad Baker or Jonathan Hefney would not be candidates to move down to linebacker because of their smaller frame and weight. I would guess it is on a case by case basis. Most times it is more a matter of need than anything else. That's why Justin King was moved over to offense from outside linebacker, he was needed more on that side of the ball. I think last year they tried to move Pat Martin down to linebacker from safety, he resisted and left the squad.

More than nice, I think. This is a tough stud of a pick-up, and he may become the RB of this class if we don't get anyone else. I think everyone is thinking of him just as a star or safety player, but he is also a power running back who has excellent vision for seams, keeps his balance, breaks tackles, and grinds out forward yards. Not a speed burner, but he could develop into a go-to guy in those 1-3 yard situations.

Did they give him his 4th star yet? I read on VQ that he was being upgraded.

He's every bit as good a prospect, if not better, than Ramsey.
Had to share this from Fortenberry on Volquest

A few cool notes from the Reeves-Maybin announcement earlier Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had to rush back for a function I needed to be at in Knoxville at 6:00 so I wasn't able to put this on the board until now.

I don't have video of Reeves-Maybin's decision but it was certainly something I was glad to be there to see. The whole school was in the gym and both the coach and principal of the school talked about the only reason they are doing this for him is because he worked hard in the classroom and since he was leaving in December and wouldn't be there for signing day they thought he deserved this moment.

When Reeves-Maybin spoke he thanked everyone in the gym, saying they all helped him get to where he was. Something I think stuck out to me he also said, 'When people see me play on TV, I don't want them to see Jalen Reeves-Maybin, I want them to see Clarksville and Northeast High School.' He was very emotional during it all. It was just cool to see him for that community, he spoke of wanting to be a part of that high school since he was a kid.

After talking to several people in the community close to the football team and the school, they all spoke of how much of how much of a hard worker he was and was someone the school and football team looked up to.

Anyways, I think he's a good football player, but his fate on the field will be determined and he could be an All-American or not even play, like with every kid we never know. But after spending some time in Clarksville the last few days I certainly think he'll be a guy someone you will be happy to cheer for.

Just wanted to share. I think in all the drama of recruitment we forget these are 17 and 18 year-old kids and this is a big day to them as well, the culmination of a lot of hard work and sacrifice by not only the player, but by people around him. Just cool a kid saw that and was very thankful for it.

The Hyphen, as he is called, gives UT commitments from the two of the top players in the state of Tennessee. Maybin's dad played basketball at Louisville for Denny Crum and his cousin plays major league baseball for the Padres.

The Hyphen could play a variety of important roles for the Vols and stand out in any of them.

He and Ramsey are very good friends. With a great season, maybe Maybin works on Ramsey and converts him.

Rivals has JRM with a 4.88 40 yard dash time. Hmmm that won't cut it, wonder if it is a misprint.

That's timed ... but he's not that slow, think of him more like 4.5. I think it is more a case that he doesn't know how to run a timed 40.

Reeves-Maybin now has 343 rushing yards tonight on 22 carries as Northeast fans sing "Rocky Top" for the UT commit.

As OR stated above in this thread, Reeve-Maybin could very well figure into our pans as a RB.
