How Good Does our Defense Have To Be?

It all depends on injuries. If we don't have many, it could be a very good year for this defense. The same is true on offense. Last year, injuries killed our season. I think our biggest problem this year is not the defense or offense, but the kicking game.

Defense will be vastly improved this year, here is why
1-Bigger
2-stronger
3-more experienced
4-faster
5-deeper
6-much better offense to control the game with
most importantly:
7-SAL SUNSERI

the end

The chances we dont have many injuries on defense this year are essentially zero. Besides, it wont take many. It would just take one or two, depending on who's injured. For example: Herman Lathers. The chances he makes it through the year unscathed and actually plays in every game are about 20%. We just have ZERO depth at LB, we cant afford to lose any of the big three for any extended period of time. We can barely afford to sit any of them for even a breather in one game our backups are so terrible.

I'm not sure we have anyone who can replace him at anywhere remotely close to his level of (at least potential) productivity. We certainly didnt have a backup that was even in his zip code during the spring. So really good chance he misses time this year. If he gets hurt early, and then someone like...say...P-Wag also gets hurt? Very, very bad news.

Like I said though: our D doesnt have to be the second coming of the Steel Curtain. They just need to make some plays. Our season this year goes how the offense goes, we arent going to beat anyone who's any good with our defense alone. We are going to win games because our offense is going to light it up; and if they dont for one reason or another, we wont be winning many.

Aren't you forgetting our kicking game? In a high scoring close game, if it comes down to a field goal or a needed long punt from deep in our territory, we could be in trouble. Not have a solid kicking game could cost us a few games.

There's lots of questions on defense ranging from LBs to Sunseri. I look forward to watching how this plays out this season. I hope to be impressed.

To be completely honest, not really.

I think our games will be coming down to just whoever has the ball last. Think BYU in 1990 with Ty Detmer, when they had basketball scores every game. They won almost all of 'em by scores of, say, 67-64, mostly because they were the last team with the ball.

That's more or less what I expect out of UT next year. Again: bet over, over, over, over, over. Dont touch the game line.

I would be shocked to see a 67-64 score in the SEC. It could happen I guess, but I doubt it without 9 overtimes or something.

Me too...but the more I look at UT's roster and then their schedule, it's as good a SEC team as any to do it.

A copy and paste from poster jmoore_21, on his studying of stats on two teams that switched from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4 scheme.

In 2007, Nick Sabans 1st year at Alabama & the 1st year they played a 3-4, they ended up as the 31st best defense in the nation. They allowed 124.15 yards rushing per game, 221.3 yards passing per game, had a total of 19 INT's, & 24 sacks on the year. That was w/ a very undersized DL for a 3-4 defense.

Go to 2008 the 2nd year in the 3-4 & add in 3* JUCO NT Terrence Cody (6'5" 380lbs) & Alabama's defense jumps to the 3rd best defense in the nation allowing 74.14 yards rushing per game, 189.4 yards passing per game, had a total of 15 INT's, & 25 sacks.

In 2010, Todd Granthams 1st year at UGA & their 1st year running the 3-4, UGA ended up as the 25th best defense in the nation. They allowed 148.23 yards rushing per game, 180.3 yards passing per game, had a total of 16 INT's & 24 sacks.

Go to 2011, UGA adds 4* JUCO NT John Jenkins, & they end up as the 5th best defense in the nation. They allowed 101.21 yards rushing per game, 176 yards passing per game, had a total of 20 INT's & 35 sacks.

Now I'm not trying to suggest that all you do is add in a big body to the NT spot & all your worries go away, but it doesn't hurt to have the DL type of bodies to be able to hold up in a 3-4 defense. The stats also show a huge bump in overall defense the next season, I think you have to credit that to the players understanding the scheme better. But it was interesting to see that the 1st year in a 3-4 defense for those 2 schools wasn't as bad as some may believe.

I also went back & looked at Alabama's & UGA's 2 deep depth chart both year's & compared them to Tennessee's "projected" 2 deep defensive depth chart this season, it was interesting to see that our 2 deep this year is as or more talented than both of theirs were.
