Great article. I remember listening to the game on the radio. The other game in 71 was on TV. |

This was the first UT game I ever saw in person. We sat in section JJ, which was a brand new section. We had moved to Knoxville the previous year, but didn't really have a strong interest. My college team at the time was South Carolina Basketball, which I really loved. For some reason my dad bought season tickets for the year.....and man, I was hooked BIG TIME. |

That's an interesting bio. SC basketball must have been pretty darn good back then because I think we beat them in 1970 in Columbia when they were ranked #1. I was thinking while reading that article; "Wow, how great would it have been to have gone to that game (Penn St game). JJ is just a couple rows over from HH, which is where I used to always sit. It was 2 rows up in the upper deck and I never sat any other place, even 50 yd line, that I liked as much as those seats. They were almost perfect. Because you are elevated in the corner end zone like that, you have both a horizontal and vertical field view. Being only 2 rows up, the view of game didn't look that far away. I've sat further up, and it was too far and not good seats. The only bad view in those seats were field goals on other end, and plays in the left corner of the end zone on the other end... Has anyone ever sit in the first 6 rows in the lower deck? Terrible seats, Can't see hardly anything. |

I'd never been in a stadium nearly that large and it felt like you could jump right down to the field, they were so steep. What a great experience....one I'll never forget. I think season tickets back then were sixty bucks. SC basketball was great back then. One of my all time favorite players still is John Roche, the point guard. We lived in Charleston and all the home games were on TV. I remember when UT beat them....I was pissed....... They spent quite a bit of time ranked #2 behind UCLA. Back then they were in the ACC and it seems like every year they would lose in the ACC tournament and back then they only took one team from each conference for the NCAA tournament....so one of the best teams in the country never got to play in the tournament.......Frank McGuire (Al's brother, I think) was the coach. |
