OK, opinions again for discussion. Which veteran defender who has made a position switch will become at least a semi-playmaker on the Vol defense this year? I guess I'll go with a "reach." Steven Fowlkes has been around Knoxville for five years now. He came in as a 213-pound wide receiver prospect. He has played defensive tackle at 250 pounds. He sat out last season but was the sack leader this spring. I think he has a chance to be a speed rusher off the edge from outside linebacker in a 34 or the right end in a 4-3 front. Other guys who have moved--- Willie Bohanon, Jacques Smith, Channing Fugate and Waggner from safety to corner. |

Waggner hasn't really moved ... but, if he's on your list, then he's the one that will do the most. Also, Vincent Dallas has moved from WR to Safety, and Brent Brewer may be a LB this season (at least that is where he is listed, if I recall). Edited by OrangeRev, Jun 19 2012, 10:20 AM.

Please no on Fugate. If he has to play much, we have problems. He is not good @ LB (it would take a dramatic improvement from the spring game for him to even be simply BAD). Best case scenario for us, out of the ones you listed, is Jacques Smith. Our D will be a WHOLE lot better if he actually plays like the Tarzan he looks like, rather than the Jane he's been his first two years. If he's a force the D may actually be fairly good. |

J. Smith has a chance for sure. He was simply an under sized and under powered defensive end. Stronger play from the interior will help the guys listed as they won't have to be crashing down inside so much to help stop the running between the tackles. Right now, Brewer is listed No. 1 at SS but I could see Moore beating him out in August. If Brewer has any visions of playing in the NFL, he really needs to step it up this fall. This is kinda off topic, but I will be interested to see what McKeefrey has been able to do with Sentimore and McCullers this summer. |
