RECRUITING SITES EXPOSED
This writer expands upon Tom Lemmings disclosure of how the recruiting ratings work.
Stars are based on how many teams offer and who those teams are. The services rank the recruits of certain schools higher because their fans buy their services.
This is why smart coaches evaluate talent and do not rely on services to recruit for them.
As a poster on another site stated:- Quote:
-
Coaches put their careers and often alot of money on the line when they take a kid's commitment.
The recruiting sites risk next to nothing. The only people who actually notice when they overrate a player is the fans of the schools that recruited him. People seldom take a whole view of their accuracy. They do reasonably well giving high ratings to guys who deserve it. But for every 4-5* player they promote, they miss 2 that might be just as deserving.

Kudoes for finding that Tux. AV won't like it much, but oh well, so it goes with the Legion of the Defeated!

It's the epitome of arrogance to criticize any recruit based on the number of stars or the schools that have offered. CDD has displayed an affinity for evaluating talent with the best of them and now it's time to show improvement on the field. And I am not talking about wins or losses but seeing a team that plays with intensity and discipline for four quarters with CDD displaying clock and game management skills commensurate with his peers.

I agree mostly with what you said shakes, but late in the recruiting season (say December) you can pick out who are going to be the great recruits by studying the offers. I don't know any other method available to serious fans of evaluating players better than offers. jmo

That may be too simplistic Galla, a fan can use any method he or she wants but it will never compare with a coach doing an in depth evaluation and making an offer based upon that rather than counting stars or offers by the big boys. Otherwise Tennessee can save 1.5 million annually and just offer everyone that the big boys offer. Every system is different, a players skill set may work for Tennessee but not for Auburn. I just think it is silly to second guess a professional based upon who has offered or the number of stars assigned to that player. We will know soon enough if CDD can coach them up or if is it all smoke and mirrors. Up to this point I have been pleased with his recruiting and greatly disappointed with his game management. That Kentucky loss still sticks in my craw and his playing nurse maid to D. Rogers still has me shaking my head in disbelief.

Remember Nebraska during the nineties when they won 3 NC's and their recruiting classes where never ranked in the top 10. Everyone wondered how they did it with such average players according to the recruiting services.

Remember Nebraska during the nineties when they won 3 NC's and their recruiting classes where never ranked in the top 10. Everyone wondered how they did it with such average players according to the recruiting services. They recruited corn-fed players that would line up and whip your ass and they ran their offense to perfection.....Kinda like they did us in the Orange Bowl remember? They went on a 92 and 96 scoring march and didn't throw more than 3 passes total in both drives...
Henderson and Haynesworth looked like they had roller skates on and both had to beat treated for whiplash after the game.

That was also the last year that Nebraska was a powerhouse...funny how Nebraska stopped using that same offense and same blocking techniques. Their offensive lines were a lot smaller after that as well.
The NCAA stopped looking away and that played a huge part in Osborne stepping down.

I don't think Haynesworth ever played against Nebraska. Henderson did, and lost.

The problem is we get all excited when Tenn lands a four or five star player. When we don't, we complain that the stars don't matter and that the coaches know what they are doing. Can't have it both ways.

I think you can have your cake and eat it too. Every Tennessee fan should be excited regardless of the number of stars a recruit has. If CDD offers and they accept then I have high hopes that they will be a difference maker and i will maintain that positive outlook until they prove me wrong. There is not a Tennessee fan alive that has the credentials to second guess our coaching staff when it comes to recruiting. Just watching Tennessee play the past two years should have given one all the ammo needed to bitch at CDD. His clock and game management SUCKED big time. And you don't have to be a football genius to ascertain his shortcomings.

Those aren't mutually exclusive. In both cases, the coaches know what they are doing, and the recruiting services are guessing.
(I'm not always happy with players that the coaches bring on. There are always a few in each class that leave me scratching my head ... I'm still trying to figure out how Barnes slipped past everyone.)

Both the coaches and recruiting services are guessing. That's why coaches say wait a few years and we'll see how they pan out. Plus, so many players wash out that it is nothing more than an educated guess by coaches. The recruiting services just watch what teams are offering players and go along with that. So the coaches in both cases are the basis for the guessing.

The NCAA stopped looking away and that played a huge part in Osborne stepping down. Damned Aggie nonsense - Nebraska crushed teams from the SEC - and anyone that says otherwise are tools.
Warden Tom steps down - Nebraska remains powerful - playing, for a BCS championship and winning another Heisman with a QB named Eric Crouch. Then a couple lean years, firing a damned fine coach and bringing in
Bill Cahallan - a NFL type that some Aggie kept yapping about bringing the Nebraska offense in to the 21st century. Remember that Aggie? That was you. A disaster on every level. Nebraska cleaned house - including the AD who made this mess - hired a man - a defensive coordinator with a track record of greatnes as a DC - junks that pass offense - goes to an old school type - wins 9 games his first season - and coaches us arguable the greatest defensive lineman to ever play in college - for those with short term memories and one play away from playing Alabama for a BCS championship.
Interesting the parallels - on the coaching piece.
As to Tom Lemming - the Notre Dame tool. Anyone that had/has an interest in recruiting has known for decades how th Lemming show works..
