Has Pandora's Box Been Opened?

Rule change makes unlimited texting open, could leave recruits and parents saying OMG

Has Pandora's Box been opened?

Coaches can now text unlimited numbers of texts to recruits now. Like coaches have nothing better to do than sit around texting recruits 24 hours a day....and some recruits will want that kind of babysitting and ego stroking.

The recruits can call a coach anytime, anywhere, as much as he wants to. However, a coach can not do that with the kid. Now a coach can text a kid to call him. That is self-defeating and the NCAA will never get the slightest handle on this.

Count me as one who believes that the NCAA has opened Pandora's Box.

Saban is gonna send 3,000 texts a day to recruits ... remember the story within the last year where a recruit had gotten 15 pieces of mail in ONE DAY from Alabama?

And, so one would think that Saban's staff would snicker and say that was overkill, right?

Then, in February RB Alvan Kamara gets 105 pieces of mail from Alabama in ONE DAY ... that's not a typo ... ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE ... and the egos of these kids just eat it up ...

the box to watch? Buying players.

It's a part of the game - maybe a bit more overt in the SEC - but that should be the biggest fear - not text msgs.

Three SEC schools pop up at the top of the list in this arena - Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M.

There have been two schools of thinking in this arena - and they are distinctly different - and all driven by the conference realignment.

a) compete in the arena - buy the players. Then the deep pockets win. The NCAA can hold down the amount of money spent - by cutting the # of scholarships to say 20 per year.(Slive has done a great job cleaning up the SEC in this area - my guess is *if* buying becomes the way to go - he'll unleash the hounds) I'm hoping this isn't the path taken - but its looking that way.
b) Or don't have an open market. Too many times in the past - a majority of schools just overlooked the buying of players - Oregon being a good example. One or two players - not that big a deal - and not worth the hassle.

I would put Auburn above Alabama. Since Saban has been there, I don't think it's taking place like previous coaches. Not sure with Miles at LSU. He has the "Chief" on defense so I doubt much is going on there. I don't know much about A&M but don't see why they have to buy players in a state where they grow on trees.

From what I've read on how money is funneled to some players at Alabama, it is not just happening but it is an art form. The NCAA knows what is happening and how it is happening, and there is nothing that the NCAA can do about it.

And there is the problem Slive has done a great job attempting to end this shady side of SEC recruiting - a damned fine job. Up front Alabama, Florida and LSU - *if* this becomes a money war - will run the hell over Slive and the rest of the SEC..

It happens the same way anyone exploits minorites in the south (Alabama in particular): through their pastors at the church.

Politicians buy votes in the same manner, and a whole host of other sorrid things that I wont discuss in the open.
