Barnes, whose father Zach played in the NFL for the Chargers and Falcons, is part of a loaded defense for Grayson, the defending Class AAAAA state champion. The unit includes the nation's top recruit, defensive end Robert Nkemdiche, and a pair of Clemson commitments, David Kamara and Wayne Gallman.

Barnes is a 6-3, 235 pound linebacker. ESPN has not rated him as yet, however, ESPN has rated the QB commit a four-star and they have him as the No. 1 recruit as Vols board right now!

Ferguson is a good pick-up, and for both sides this is a 2 am bar pickup.

For Tennessee, we struck out on everyone and had to go through a second round of QB evaluations. Of what is left out there, he is about as good as I would hope for in this class, given that we already have three talented QBs on the roster.

For Ferguson, after losing his opportunity at Alabama and LSU, he pulled the trigger at Tennessee about 2 seconds after getting the scholly offer.

I'm telling you....Riley is a great pickup. ESPN has him ranked as the top recruit in North Carolina, because they know how good he can be.

He will have a couple of years to grow up (this is required) and he's got all the physical tools. This is a win / win. He's already better than Worley...Peterman, I'm not so sure as I haven't seen him play.

If you'd like, I'll go watch him play a couple of times this year (Butler plays my kid's school Ardrey Kell, as they are in the same division) and give you a report!!!

Great evaluation there OR. 2AM bar pick up!!! :roflmao:

The kid is not the equivalent of a 6 pack rating-6 beers before you would consider taking action.

The kid is talented and all of his options, as you mentioned, had dried up because of previous commitments.

Some may question Barnes, but the staff reportedly picked up on him after watching the kid, while the staff was recruiting other kids on the team. He is a tireless worker and the staff reportedly believe he has a tone of upside potential. He plays DE in high school, but will play LB in college.

Yes, just to be clear, Ferguson was playing the game too long and the doors slammed in his face on the places he was targeting. QBs are the first doors to close in the recruiting game, and someone forgot to tell him that.

He is a legit SEC talent ...

Apparently some of the neggertrons think they know more than Sal Sunseri when it comes to evaluating linebacker talent.
Excerpt from Rivals (Volquest)
The Vol staff was understandably excited to hear of Barnes decision. Tennessee's new defensive coordinator, Sal Sunseri, has seen players like Barnes before and he's molded them into more than solid contributors.

"They told me I was a great worker and they told me they really wanted me," Barnes said. "Coach Sal was going crazy when I committed and he told me he was going to put me in the NFL."

The staff saw films of Barnes, saw his workouts at a combine and invited him to camp, where he dominated play.

I'll take Sunseri's opinion any day over recruiting gurus and fans opinions.

The scouting services (Rivals, Scout, and others) provide listings of players that (a) show up at competition events, (b) go to schools that traditionally produce players - the coaches know how to give their kids exposure, and (c) get offers.

Not all SEC caliber players fall into the categories of (a) and (b) before they get offers.

So, just because a player doesn't have stars beside his name does not mean he is a zero-talent player. To think that is just ignorant or immature, or both. And, given the fact that Dooley and his staff of evaluators has proven over multiple years that they know how to evaluate talent, then it just shows further ignorance or immaturity, or both, to assume that a player like Barnes is somehow inferior.

Now, with regard to Barnes ...

(1) His dad played in the NFL (Zach Barnes, a DT, was drafted #230 overall and played for the Chargers and Falcons)
(2) He is 6-3, 225 and ran a 4.7
(3) Sal really, really liked him
(4) At the March Atlanta NUC combine, he was the overall MVP and the combine king

and

(5) He's been trying to get recruited as a DE, but Sal saw him and thought he was better suited as a LB ... viola.
