In case you don't follow recruiting very much, (a) we should sign a QB in every class including the 2013 class, (b) we have been striking out left-and-right with all of the recruits that we had offered early on, and there is not much promising left on the board (in fact, I can't find a single uncommitted QB out there with an active offer from Tennessee). And, (c) the QB position is one of those positions that gets recruited early, and the game is getting very late.

Translated ... I'm nervous.

The Vols continue to evaluate QBs this week ... of note, 3-star QB Riley Ferguson (NC) with offers from LSU, Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, VaTech, and many others was being evaluated yesterday. Apparently has a canon for an arm, and would be interested in UT if offered ... but I don't think UT offered. He is supposed to be back to Knoxville in a few weeks.

I'm not sure why UT didn't offer even though there is indeed interest from UT, but apparently there are some other QBs coming in this week and perhaps UT wants to get through all of them before dishing out a second round of scholarship offers.

Other QBs that have been evaluated are 0-star Charlie High (TN), 2-star Skyker Windmiller (KS), and lefty 2-star Brent Stockstill (TN). Stockstill was rated higher than High and Windmiller, but I don't think that any of the three are SEC caliber QBs

Here's Riley Ferguson footage, an interview, and analysis from the Elite 11 Camp a couple of weeks ago:

http://search.espn.go.com/riley-ferguson/video/6

My take is that Ferguson is gunning for the NFL, and I don't think he wants to go to a losing team ... Chaney will really have to give him some hot sauce along with the offer if he were to commit to the Vols. Overall, let's look at the teams he is considering.

  • Alabama - And, up until a week ago, I would have thought he would commit to Alabama, but Bammer just picked up their second QB commit, and so I don't think they will take a third.
  • LSU - They already have 2 4-star QBs committed ... plus distance tells me that this isn't an option for him.
  • Notre Dame - They have a 4-star QB committed ... and, I doubt he is Catholic
  • Michigan - They have a 4-star QB committed, and big distance factor.
  • North Carolina - They have a 3-star QB committed, and a shaky situation with the NCAA there ... doubt he would go to the 'heels.
  • VaTech - They have a 3-star QB committed ... a possibility.
  • South Carolina - They have not offered yet, but they also have 4-star Conner Mitch (NC) committed ... he was the guy I was hoping would commit to UT.
  • Clemson - They have no QB commits, close to home, and a depth situation similar to UT. Dabo definitely know how to pour on the hot sauce, so they have got to be seen as a favorite.

If UT offers, we would be in a battle with Clemson and North Carolina or South Carolina ... and, overall, given that we have 3 NFL quality QBs already on the team, a player with upside like Ferguson is about the best that I think we can do in 2013. He looks to be SEC quality and has some good upside.

By the way, on VolQuest, a poster wrote that Fergson's Aunt is saying that he wants to attend UT ... and, basically, that he will commit if he gets an offer.

CHARLIE HIGH FIVE BABY!!!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking that Charlie High won't even get a preferred walk-on offer at UT ... its not that he is on the bottom of the list, he isn't even on the list.

Others that are due to be on campus and evaluated this week:

3-star QB Kurt Benkert (FL) is supposed to be in Knoxville on Wednesday
3-star QB Christopher Laviano (NY) is supposed to be in later this week

I would take Ferguson in a heartbeat. He has a Bray like arm (and a Bray like head).

@gregauman Cape Coral QB Kurt Benkert says he is "basically down to" USF and Tennessee. Scheduled to visit Vols on Wednesday, make decision in 2 weeks."

Of course, he doesn't have an offer yet ... but I'm thinking that UT will have an offer to one of these QBs that they are evaluating (remember, we do not have ANY committable offers on the table at the moment to an uncommitted QB), and I'm guessing that we will then have a QB commit within the next week.

He is 6'3", decent arm, and he can punt too. :)

I'm going to be pissed if we sign Benkert....even if he can punt. IMO it would be a scenario where he transfers after a year or two in search of playing time. If we're going to waste a scholly on a quarterback like that, he needs to have a five star friend who just can't stand the thought of not going to college without Kurt.
