Just wanted to thank Tux, Zippy, Rev, Jolly Vol (aka Orange Butt) for a decent board where rational, reasonable discussions can be had without the ambushing, hijacking by Negatrons that goes on elsewhere. What really irritates me more than anything else is the Negatrons total lack of understanding and conception of just how low the program had sank and what a monumental re-building job was facing the coach who followed Boy Kiffin. It happened to be Dooley, but could have been someone else and the re-construction would have still been a very lengthy and difficult task. I see skeptics here, but most all seem to be of the mindset that Dooley has to be given a fair amount of time to see this thing through. I expect to see considerable improvement on the field and in the won-lost record this year. The big reason being that those kids who had to play offensive line the last two years are now young men, tailored and transformed by Ron McKeefrey into what looks like a bunch of Clydesdales. I understand the concerns about the defense, but I believe this new staff has some great teachers and the move to have two coaches on the back end of the defense was, IMO, a big positive going forward. In Ainsley and Conklin, I believe the defensive staff has two rising stars in the business and they bring different but still outstanding traits to the staff. But anyway, I'm rambling, once again thanks so very much for a comfortable and intelligent place to post on the internet. |

The board is what it is because we have some posters who are more in-tune with substantive football discussion, rather than smart-ass cutesy topics. Some hipsters will be bored, but those wanting to discuss reality and down and dirty football topics, this is a good place that has not been dumbed down by the plethora of trolls. They are exposed as such and shown how moronic they are. Keep bringing it Lonzo. Your input is valued by those who want to discuss sports and other topics. |

I vividly remember being at the UT-South Carolina game when Casey Clausen was a senior. Our team was huge and so much bigger than South Carolina. Thats is the way our team used to be compared to other teams. However, that changed soon after and we have been playing catch up for the past 6-7 years. |

Should have mentioned the other side of the trenches too. For two years, Coach Dooley and his defensive staff had to play defensive ends and walkons at defensive tackles. That all changes this year too. With the positive news about McCullers reporting in decent to good shape and with guys like Hood, Couch, Sentimore and Greg Clark (NT only) actually being legitimate D1 defensive tackles, the interior of the defensive line ain't gonna get shoved around like the past two years. Question: What are the chances, considering his impressive performance as a true freshman, that AJ Johnson might just be the second coming of Al Wilson?? |

Unfortunately there isn't something like a "fair amount of time" in college football. And in real terms there hasn't been since the 20th century. Without passing the buck or somehow attempting to pinpoint someone/anyone to blame for the current state of affairs at the University of Tennessee athletics - skewered towards football. Recruiting - over the last 4 years, regardless of who was doing the recruiting - by any recruiting metric - its been good - right at the edge of the elite status - but good none the less. Attrition - horrendous perception/reality UT athletics has been on a roller coaster ride since the mid 2000's - stuff was changing - expample being UF - the time between Spurrier & Meyer - good recruits questionable other wise. Auburn the same, Alabama, the same, Arkansas - LSU under Saban was doing a great job. Fulmer was past his prime and the former AD was hesitant to do much, if anything. Tuberville, Nutt, Shula, etc. out - Others replaced,em a couple with questionable track records in the NFL - Saban and Petrino, Meyer - who had an undefeated BCS bowl winning Utah, but would his offense work in the SEC, then Auburn brings in a guy who was attempting to bring back from the dead a school no one had ever heard of, till Auburn hired him. Finally the former AD pulled the plug on Fulmer - did a quick search and hired an out of work kid L. Kiffin - brash, bold, sleazy, hired his old man - then started doing his best impression of Steve "Superior" Spurrier w/o the gravitas. Sounded nice to some after the Fulmer years - with little time recruiting wise on his side - brought in some players - and won 8 ball games - i.e. a 3 game improvement. Then he packed up and hauled ass - to arguably a better job at Southern California - (reminds me a bit about the story of Paul Bryant dumping Texas A&M for "mama", that being Alabama - and if there is any interest look at the train wreck in College Station he left behind) Losing seasons at branded schools like Tennessee happens. Kiffin's entrance and exit doesn't. The former AD did his stuff - possibly found there wasn't a lot of interest in the job - turned down a possibility - then found Derek Dooley. Lets just say the conservatives, traditional SEC, would ask WTF - Derek Dooley? In cyberspace the four main points that support Dooley's hire. a) smart - got a degree in law b) son of a great - nephew of another great one c) worked for Saban d) and moma who loves her son Attrition continued unabated - recruiting steady, even though the recruiting classes were missing what some believe key elements in being among the elites in the SEC. getting rid of basically the entire coaching staff - was a eye opener - in a very conservative SEC - and while many sing the praises of the replacements - there is a whole lot of WTF being asked. Then, finally, the guy who created all at Tennessee on this path gets the axe. |

Speaking of UT/Cocks....I was in Columbia for the 98 game. Tee hit a zillion straight passes and we manhandled those cocks like I've never seen a cock get handled. I'll never forget the USC fans heading for the car after the first quarter.....I've never seen that anywhere since.......By the end of the game all you saw was orange. Of course that team had several future felons, bad characters and chronic farters.....but dang....they could sure play ball...... |

Good points, Texie Pooh. People tend to forget the timing of kiffin's departure. Two weeks until signing day....what high quality coach of any stature would make the move then? Hammy's best bet was a good assistant or a mid level head coach who would grab at the chance as they don't come along often. The fact that Dooley salvaged recruiting was amazing. He's played with half a deck the past two years and when Hunter went down, it was a Killer. But the shelves are re-stocked.....it's time for Dooley to prove he's got what it takes......I sure hope he is successful |

I've heard that the trick to cock handling is similar to snake handling. Keep them cold and in the refridgerator before you whip them out...... |

Regarding McCullers, if he is as strong as he is big and can get down low with the opponents center, stand him up and push him back, he will have done what the coaches want most from a NG. If he stands the center up and moves him back he can destroy many running plays and most passing plays Pulling guards are rerouted by his presence in the backfield, the QB cannot step up in the pocket and if the DEs are doing their job there will be very little space for the QB to do anything, with LBs blitzing he would have to throw it away or take a sack. That is the essence of what Big Mac COULD bring to the defense. Coaches will probably know before the end of august if he can do that or not. PS, great job on the Board. (you need hover read). |

It will be interesting to see if a center, alone, can handle that big old youngster. Obviously, if the opponent tries to run between the tackle they will have to assign a guard to help block Mt. McCullers. The NT position, at least on paper, now has some of the best quality and deepest depth on the football team. Here's the two deep at defensive tackle at about this time last year, NT- Daniel Hood, Joseph Ayers, 3 tech or quick tackle had two defensive ends-- Malik Jackson and Corey Miller. I still feel like that with McCullers, Hood, Clark and Tugboat on the nose, that Couch might get to play some end in a 34 where he can use his athletic ability to much more of an advantage and won't get beat up either. |
