After watching a lot of the NCAA Tournament, I find myself asking the question, "Do the Vols have the talent that it takes to go deep into the tournament?" Let's look at the play at the point. We do not have anyone who can handle the ball when the ball is being pressured. We do not have anyone who can penetrate the zone defenses that we are seeing employed. We lack the quick guards that I am seeing dominate play. Shooting guard - Golden and McRae fill the bill here. Small Forward/Swing Man - McRae will have to play this role. Frankly, this is the role that we need Maymon to be able to play, but frankly, he is not capable of playing the swing position in a way that we need him to. He just is not capable of shooting the ball well consistently from the outside. Power Forward - This is where we need Stokes to play, but unfortunately, we are having to play Maymon here. he is a beast, but we need more size at the 4 spot. Center - Stokes is being forced to play it. The teams in the NCAA Tourney have 6-10 guys -7 footers patrolling the center position. In the tournament, we are seeing teams penetrating with their guards, feeding their post players well, post players scoring well, post players kicking the ball back out with great timing. In my opinion, we lack a point guard and the big post layer that we need to dominate. What are your thoughts? |

No. I doubt that's enough talent to go deep in the tournament, maybe a sweet 16 if they were playing good ball at the right time. Next years team should be pretty darn good. The year afters won't be quite as good but maybe an NCAA tourney team. Then after that, unless we really pick up the recruiting we are going to be one of the least talented teams in the nation at a major university. Beating College of Charleston out for players will not get it done. No way. Cuonzo has great coaching ability. This was the first UT team I've seen in my life that knew how to block out for example. But, the recruiting is an F. |

Offensively, I thought Golden looked much more like a point guard toward the end of the season. Where he's suffered is on defense as it's usually his guy who gets loose and penetrates. I could live with him at point it he can step up the defense. The big thing is that we can't play him 36 minutes a game or he wears out. As far as potential, I think there's plenty. The JC will compete with McCrea (and hopefully win) at the three. We're pretty deep at post if we keep Hall and I expect Yemi to be a little closer to being two dimensional next year. It just depends on how much more these guys can improve...I expect a much better team out of the gate next year. What's scary is recruiting. We're chasing guys that aren't nearly as highly thought of as we chased with Pearl. I realize that it takes time to make connections with players who are underclassmen....but I thought we'd be seeing more talented players attracted to Martin by now and I'm just not seeing it yet. |
