Huge game for Coach Martin and the Vols. If they harbor any hope to make the big dance, they must win this game tonight. Also puts them in a position to challenge for four slot in SEC tourney. Next two are against tougher opponents, Candy in Knoxville and LSU in Baton Rouge.
I look for Jarnell to have a big game! :powerT:

My son and I are heading down to watch the game. We've got good seats...but don't look for us....we'll be on the same side as the cameras. The SC arena is a great place to watch a game. There is MUCH on the line if we win this game, but this is a big time dangerous game as SC has NOTHING to lose at this point and we're NOT a good road team.

I'll give an in-person report when I get home tonight.....if I'm not too tired. If I am, I'll do it tomorrow am....

Weebels blew out LSU. If Miss. ST. beats the Turd tonight and Vols win, UT would be in sole possession of 4th place. Who woulda thunk it a month ago?

This game concerned me heading into the evening. We came out with a needed road win. Tre Golden set the tone with trey to open the scoring.

Nice all around game on the road. South Carolina is not a good team, but they do play hard. It took a solid effort on our part.

Another nice game from Jordan McRae. He played one if his best defensive games tonight. Stokes and Maymon owned the glass. I wonder why Maymon sat out so much tonight. Stokes reminds me of Wes Unseld.

Try as he might, Maymon just couldn't seem to get past Steven Pearl in the rotation last year! :wtf:

Tennessee did not play a great game tonight, way too many turnovers. But, the mark of a good team is to be able to win on the road when you aren't having the best of nights. They have two really tough games remaining while Bama has AllBarn at home and then a trip to Ole Piss. The scenario I see is that UT must win out and hope that the Weebels can knock off the Gumps in Oxford.

OK.....just got home.

Very sparce crowd...probably 25 or so percent orange.

We were sitting behind Dave Neal.....dang he's got a big rear end. You'd never know watching him on TV.

This is my first game watching Martin coach and I have to say I was VERY impressed. If you haven't seen him in person you would have NO idea how active and loud he is. During time outs on TV he always looks like he's about to take a nap.....but I was sitting on the other side of the arena and I could hear him screaming instructions at the defense in the first half.

Now that we have Stokes (who looked a lot like a freshman for the first three quarters of the game)....our clear achilles heel is ball handling. Golden got in the doghouse big time late in the first half, but every time Martin yanked him out of the game, we started turning it over. Martin had to pick his poison....finally putting Lopez in late in the first half to try to take care of the ball. Golden didn't start the second half. I think Martin was mad because Golden's man was getting to the basket and when he took an off balance shot early in the count it was all he could take. Golden redeemed himself in the second half as our half court offense deteriorated to the Golden to the basket show. While is guy was quicker....Golden was bigger and stronger and he played a big role in our getting back out to a decent lead after we gave away our first half lead late in the half.

In person, I thought the player of the game was actually Cam. He's not a point guard and he's going to turn the ball over if he has to handle it as a point....but he provided a very calming presence. I have no idea what his stats were like, but he got a bunch of big rebounds, helped break the press that was giving us trouble a lot of the game...particularly late in the first half......several assists and he even hit a couple of threes.

Jordan McCrea can be a star...he's very talented and athletic (and he's never going to be a point guard either)..the defense is coming along well and he's really tough to handle if he gets loose moving toward the rim. He had a very strong game.

Maymon had to sit after his third foul and they left him in the bench until Stokes got his. Maymon picked up three fouls in three in minutes to open the second half...and I think Martin wasn't real happy with that.

This team isn't perfect by any means....but the switching defense is a joy to watch in person. Watching Martin prowl the sidelines (he never sat down and was up and down the sideline all game from baseline to way past the coaching box line. Watching this team play hard is great fun as well. I'll take ANY road win in the SEC and go home happy. Let's hope we can do it again against LSU.....

+1 I could not think of Unseld but you are absolutely correct Tux.

Stokes reminds me of Unseld because of his thick body, the way he blocks out down low and controls the boards, how he can play solid defense down low in the post, his strength, and his quiet demeanor on the court. It's been a long time since I have seen anyone look and play so much like Unseld, who I grew up watching and admiring.

I do see similarities. Stokes is struggling a bit right now and I think it's mostly because he's thinking too much...which is understandable at this point in his career. When he gets the ball right away and moves to the basket, he's pretty good. When he's more posted up and has to create from the post up, he's not doing so well. No worries...give this guy an offseason and pre-season with Martin and he'll be very, very good next year.

Did I say just how impressed I was with Martin's sideline demeanor? He's just the opposite of what I was seeing on TV. He's engaged and clearly in charge. The only thing I don't quite get is all the timeouts when we're trying to kill clock....but I'm sure there's a good reason......oh yeah...I read somewhere that Golden was in the dog house and didn't start the second half because he tossed a towel on the sidelines when he was frustrated......I really, really like Martin!!!!
