Jeronne Maymon Improvement Opens Eyes

A year ago, Jerrone Maymon was not deemed good enough to play much for the Vols. Steve Pearl was thought to be the better player and Pearl beat out Maymon for the back up post spot.

One year later, look at these stats and they will open your eyes to a player, who has worked his butt off and has become a good basketball player. I would like to see him work on cutting down on his turnovers. He gets careless with his passing. He is a tough rebounder and at 6'6" can control the glass in a game at the collegiate level.

I still say he would be a NFL tight end if he gave it a try.

Here is a post from a fan on VN discussing what Maymon has accomplished.

Free Throw Rate is simple: FTA/FGA. How many free throws you get compared to every shot.

For Maymon, his rate is 67.2. That basically means for every three field goal attemps, he gets two free throws.

He's converting at a pretty decent clip too, at 64.7%, top 30 in conference and major improvement from where he was (25% last year), and shooting 64.3% in conference play.

Maymon has shot more free throws than anybody in the conference, with 150 this year (5.36 pg for the year) and 98 in conference (7.54 pg in conference).

It also helps Jeronne is converting 57% of his shots on the field (60% in conference) while shooting and a big reason for that is easy buckets. Jeronne is averaging almost three offensive rebounds per game (2.857 to be exact), top six in conference, which is letting him not only get easy buckets around the rim, but more opportunites to get fouled as defenses are more likely to foul on offensive rebounds.

It's a great testament to Jeronne's work ethic. He's in much better shape and crash the board more effectively. Also, he's improved his free throw percentage by almost 40%. Also, one last thing, Jeronne did not shoot well last year, only 47%, which isn't good for a post player that plays inside 15 feet. This year, he improved that by 10%, his true shooting percentage by 17.1%, and effective shooting percentage by 10%.

So overall, while Jeronne has improved his game and his stamina, but is doing a much better job of finishing around the rim and at the line. It helps that he is stronger and you can tell by watching that he's using his right hand much more effectively, leading to a better conversion rate on his shots.

A Very Manly Man

Eh.....it was a very different system....Pearl knew it & Maymon didn't. I saw him play in his first game and I stated then that he'd be a good player and a good leader.....but he looked a bit lost last year and I'm amazed how good he is around the rim after watching how bad he was last year. He's working on an outside shot now....ought to be interesting....

FWIW, Steven Pearl was one of Maymon's biggest supporters. Plus, Pearl could make surre everyone was in position. Pearl did more with less athletic ability than anyone on the team. Hee never got a call from tghe refs, either.

Steven Pearl had no business on an SEC basketball court..........period. And CCM can coach circles around Bruce Pearl. However, Bruce is the best snake oil salesman in the country.

I will say this about Cuonzo Martin.....the man has done a great job of piecing together this team and melding these pieces of scrap iron into a steel blade. If you recall, the Vols were picked to finish 11th in the SEC by the SEC media, prior to the season beginning. Here we are in 4th place and battling to finish as high as 2nd in the league if everything were to fall into a perfect place for us.

The team is taking on the personality of it's coach. Having Stokes doeswn't hurt, either. Not only talent, but his swagger as well.
