Cuonzo Martin's Vols withstood a UConn rallly to win 60-57.

The Vols played tenacious defense and dominated the game in the paint, led by Jarnell Stokes and Jerron Maymon.

Kenny Hall had a clutch bucket that gave ys some momentum before the Huskies rallied to take us to the brink.

Hall dud miss a dunk for the 4th straight game. He needs to kearn to lay the ball in, as his misses help cist us one game and almost this game.

A Very Manly Man

Hall must have small hands to be such a big guy....and can't hang on the to ball when he dunks one handed in traffic.

Stokes is a joy to watch. He's a giant space eater inside with amazing skills to boot. UConn had a very strong front line and we beat them badly inside. Stokes demeanor and composure, combined with this size and skill set, makes him a very rare player. It now sounds like he's a) trying to convince Cam Clear to play b-ball next year and apparently Martin is at least entertaining the idea b) trying to recruit half of Memphis to take a hard look at playing on the Hill. He's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites after just three games.

Uconn got back in the game due to a couple of wild, clutch threes at the end - combined with some really crappy three throw shooting by UT down the stretch. Thankfully we hit them at the end, when we had to have them.

If we can figure out how to play on the road...the second half of the season should be a lot of fun. I think we'd have to win the SEC tourney to make the NCAA's this year and I won't rule that out....but if we can get and stay above .500, we could make quite a run in the NIT AND return nearly our entire team next year. It looks like our dark winter of UT basketball may be fairly short lived.

And I take everything back I said about Martin using a zone defense. He had the patience to stick to his man philosophy and it's clearly working well at this point. We've severely restricted some pretty powerful offenses starting with Florida.....

If we could get a point guard.....

Saw where Jarnell Stokes was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.

Bruce Pearl said that he always thought that Stokes would do great things in college, but he said that he never imagined that he do it so quickly.

Cuonzo has a few signater wins with the Uconn and Gators win, but the team is an up and down team that lacks a point guard with a coach that is suspect at the moment.

I think that Cuonzo is a keeper. The kids play as hard for him as they did Bruce.
