A Very Manly Man

The Death of UT Basketball has been prematurely announced....

Last night was fun, fun, fun........our guys played well and completely dominated UNCG.

Is this a Pig in the Poke? Who knows.....we aren't going to shoot like that very often, but more importantly, we played hardnosed basketball for forty minutes. We're still woefully undermanned at the five.....but did I see a glimmer of hope?

Player Breakdown:

Superstar: Who is the man and what has he done with our Golden? Holy crap, I'm not sure I've ever seen such a dramatic improvement in a player from freshman to sophomore. What else can this guy do? He's leading the team, scoring almost at will, averaging ten assists, with hardly a turnover. He'll pop the three, take you to the hoop and score when he's hammered.....what a player. Trae will be a first team All SEC and he'll be the guy we need to push us to be as good as we can be. The last player I can recall that impacted his UT team to this degree is Lofton (nobody will evey shoot as well as Lofton, but Lofton never had nine assists either).

Stars:
Maymon: Another amazing transition. What amazes me is that he was running the floor like a guard. Golden hit him a couple of times ahead of the break for layups. He made them like he's been doing this for years. He's tough around the basket, is finishing when he gets the ball and rebounding very well for a large, suddenly fast moving, stump.

Good Efforts:
McCrea: I as really down on him after the LMU game, as I he was like a ghost with a bad 3 point shot. But he was much more involved on both sides of the ball last night and hit some big threes. As steady as Golden is, McCrea will be streaky, but it's good to see the good side.

Swiper: I know this was just UNCG....but he played hard down low and actually played more like a big man, than I've ever seen. He's an added benefit, because he's got guard skills and can use them when required. I honestly think he's going to play more than Hall this year a) because he's more effective b) Hall has never met a foul he won't commit

Tattie Tatum: Let's face it, Cam has found his role. Locker room leader and steady 3. He's not going to score twenty five and he's not going to get in anybody's face...but he'll play hard, help move the ball in transition and he'll knock down some threes. I thought it was critical that he really up his game if we had any chance of being decent this year....but with the Blooming of Golden and Maymon....nevermind.

Skyler: His defense is waaaaay better and he's going to scrap around and play hard. His three is remakably better as he's found his confidence and stopped thinking so much. He didn't play as much last night because McCrea showed up...but he will play a big role on this team.

Yikes:
Hall....Double Yikes. I think he's feeling the pressure to perform or he's prepping himself for a carreer as the worlds tallest Full Contact Fighter. If you watch him besides Maymon it's amazing. Maymon keeps good defensive position, doesn't leave his feet and is getting more and more effective. Hall is constantly out of place and off his feet. If he had a crow bar, he'd be facing hard time.

The Nigerian.....he's not really a Yikes, but he's clearly lost on offense. I DO like the fact that he apparently has no fear and isn't afraid to mix it up. We're going to need a third 5, as the first two will use up all ten fouls by the half, if they aren't careful.

We've got a tough, tough schedule this year, but I at least hold hope that we can be competitive and maybe steal a couple of quality wins. Martin has clearly instilled discipline and the defense will get better and better as they learn the system. I really like the high switches on defense, It keeps constant ball pressure.

I did not see the game. Can anyone who watched the game, tell us about Cuonzo Martin's style of play?

What tempo are we playing in the first few exhibition games and this game?

Defensively, how far are we extending the defensive pressure? Are we packing it in? Or are we extending the pressure and trapping?

Offensively, how are we attacking the defense? Are we penetrating? Working the ball around until we get an open shot(Patience)?

It is nice to hear that Woolridge and Maymon played hard. We are not hearing much of anything about Kenny Hall and that is disconcerting. We need him to be grabbing 8-9 boards every game.

The tempo is as fast as the D can go....which sounds odd at first, but we're willing to run when we can...and Golden has been great at directing the breaks, but if we set up on offense, we work the ball a lot....not looking to just jack something up quickly unless it's an open shot. The discipline on offense so far has been pretty impressive (better than with Pearl....but we all know that Pearls biggest weakness was halfcourt offense.

We put pressure on the ball up high and extend our man defense. The big guys are trained to come out on screens and cover ball until the screener can recover. It leaves their big guy open for a second or so......but last night they couldn't take advantage.

On offense, we run this motion sort of thing where the wings cut up top in a weave. The big guys are mostly popping out to screen. There was a very good pick and roll from Golden to Maymon. It's not high tech, but everybody's moving...looking for a good shot.

I forgot Yikes guy....Washpun. Martin played a LOT of the second team through the second half and to their credit, the score differential actually increased, but Washpun who got at least ten minutes, is clearly a project and clearly not going to be ready to give Golden quality minutes in the SEC unless he really improves on almost everything but defense. I sure hope we're working on plan B.

Richardson.....looks a LOT like McCrea in size and quickness. I think he's going to be good one before he's done.
