A Very Manly Man

I got my first look at the B-BallVols last night. What I saw over the span of the game is about what I expected. The first thing to note about Martin's coaching is that the Defense will have to set up the Offense, particularly with our skill set. The first ten minutes of the game, we played excellent defense, put the TailSplitters on their heels and ran away. It was fun to watch, and once we got jacked up, we were hitting shots all over the court, including two straight threes by McBee. Our weakness started rearing it's head as the second half progressed. We weren't able to maintain the defensive pressure - partly due to having to sub down low constantly due to foul trouble and partly because we lost our focus and actually looked a little tired down the stretch. LMU is a good team, however....and beating them by 9 is much better than losing to Indy by even more last year. What really bugged me was about three time our post defender got hung up on a high screen where the LMU player rolled to the basket all alone....this will get better as the team learns to communicate better. Our problem is going to be scoring. First of all...the players who impressed me the most Golden - This guy will be a star. He'll lead the team in scoring and assists which he did last night....and I don't think he had a turnover. He's stronger, faster and much more confident. Maymon - He will have to be our force in the paint. Double digit scoring and rebounding for the second straight game. He's not flashy and he doesn't have a great shot, but he's going to be our blue collar scrapper, and he'll do it pretty well. The free throw shot looks way better than last year, and he seems to take on a leadership role, along with Golden That's it folks - The rest: Hall - He looks JUST like last year. Some scoring ability, but on defense he finds himself out of position too much and then makes silly fouls trying to make up. He came with with high energy and was very involved in the defense early....and then just went back to being Hall. McCrea - Whatever offensive ability this guy has - he's equally as bad on defense. As cocky as he comes across, it's odd that he looks tentative when shooting, but he really showed me nothing last night. It was hard to tell he was even in the game for long stretches. McBee - Looks better and much more confident. Frankly, I'd start him at the two simply because he's going to play harder on d AND shoot better (at least for now). Maybe McRea is tearing it up in practice, but McBee was clearly the better player last night. Wooly - He provided some quality minutes in the post as both Hall and Maymon dealt with foul trouble. He and the Nigerian had better be ready to play, as this is likely to happen a lot this year, with Hall being hall and Maymon fighting for everything he can get. The Nigerian - He's very athletic and not afraid to stick his nose the fight. Not really great on offense, but probably better than Hall already on Defense. Washpun - He looked completely intimidated. I was really worried about how he'd do when the lights came on and he's got a looong way to go (and a short time to get there) or we're going to wear Golden out. I think Martin needs a short term plan B at backup point...at least for now. Tatey Tatum - (almost forget Cam....that's not good) He's not the senior, take charge kind of guy. I think it's just his personality. He defense was improved, but the shot is still irratic. He still tends to disappear at time. He's got to step up more and take some pressure off of Golden. Richardson - He looked as good as McCrea out there, frankly. He's athletic and has pretty good offensive skills. All and all, I'll take a win over a very good LMU team. I just hope we see more of the first half Vols than the second half Vols. Edited by JollyVolly, Nov 8 2011, 09:10 AM.

lmu had a lot of players in Rocky Top league. They all seemed to be shooters. Their high ranking is no joke. |
