It had become pretty apparent recently, that JJ's "personal problems" were drug related. Dooley bent over backwards to keep him around...and the guy's just too stupid to realize what's best for his own future.

What a waste....James Banks version 140............

Yep, I've felt it was a drug issue all along ... makes the most sense given that he stayed in Knoxville while out of school. But, guys, got to remember that the success rate of drug treatment programs is only about 5-15%. There has to be something more than the treatment program ...

“Our program has devoted a tremendous amount of energy, resources, support, and care in an effort to help Janzen manage his personal challenges,” Dooley said in the release. “I will always be there to help him as a person, but there comes a time when a player’s actions preclude him from the privilege of playing for the University of Tennessee football team.

“Although I’m disappointed with this outcome, we will never compromise the long-term organizational values and goals we maintain here at Tennessee.”

Derek Dooley did the right thing and I applaud him for taking this action. A team is only as strong as it's weakest link and doing drugs is unacceptable.

Jackson just pissed away a big paycheck in the NFL. He would be set for life, but instead will live in squalor.

Does this mean that Prentiss Wagner goes back to safety? Who slides in at corner if this is the case?

We are going to be alright.

My gut tells me that either Moore or Waggoner becomes the FS ... from what I have read, we have enough depth at corner to allow Waggoner to move (but not as much depth at safety). If Waggoner moves, then Lanier or Coleman gets a starting position. The second highest possibility is that Moore becomes the starter at safety.

.... or I'm completely misreading everything and Wagee is right about Wilks. :)

I would like to add one thing to some gloom I'm reading.

(1) Team chemistry is essential, and this clearly has to do with team chemistry, discipline, and character.
(2) The Vols are not likely going to do that much in 2011 .. they might surprise us, but the odds are that they are going to be highly inconsistent - we would be better with Jackson, but I don't think he's going to be the difference between an SECE or SEC championship. And, Jackson would not have been here in 2012 anyway ...

My best guess is that Moore gets the first shot. If we have to lose a player at least it's a db....we've got loads of them. Not to say that they'll be as effective as JJ, who was clearly at a level where few can be. Kicking kids off the team (especially potential All Americans) has to be the hardest job for a coach.

Waggner is probably first in line, but he is a MUCH better corner than a safety, and I think the Vols are better when he is at corner. I think it just depends upon whether (a) Moore at Safety or (b) Coleman-Corner/Waggner-Safety has the least impact.

ESPN story by Chris Low is saying that "sources" confirm it is drugs:

Dooley declined to divulge specifics, but sources told ESPN.com that Jackson has battled substance-abuse issues during his time at Tennessee and failed multiple drug tests.

I'll bet Dooley starts giving 1st team snaps to B Moore in the next practice. P Wagg is a very good corner but not so great a tackler at safety. I think Dooley will start working on B Moore as FS tonight.

By the way, Hubbs has now come out and say that JJ's "personal issues" are substance abuse issues, and this is and has always been the case. Now, whether or not this is the reason he was dismissed is not confirmed, but the issues over the past year have been substance abuse.

Well....we arent really playing without Malik, he's just banged up. As for our best LB, that isnt saying much. Our 'best' LB from last year probably wasnt good enough to start anywhere else in the SEC, except maybe Vandy or something. So not that much of a loss, really....and, frankly, I'm thinking Maggit and AJ will be an improvement by the end of the year anyway.

Janzen though, I'm going to lose some sleep over that one. We are not getting him back, and we damn sure dont have anyone on the roster who can even remotely replace him on the field. Waggner is as good as we will have at FS, and while I dont think we will lose too much replacing him at CB, we lose ALOT subbing him in for Janzen.

Just...damn. Another month, another kick in the junk for UT fans.

I'm not sure what all was involved, A lot I'm sure. If we kick someone off for smoking weed only we aren't even trying run for championships, we're trying to run for sportsmanship awards.
