Tigers coach Josh Pastner tells Knoxville radio that game vs. UT a bad fit It is glaringly apparent that Tiger High basketball coach, Josh Pastner is scared to play the University of Tennessee. Pastner is is trying to duck out form getting beat by the Vols yet again. |

I think he's being realistic. I think this is the exact opposite of Bruce's attitude. We are the big dog in the state. We show them how weak they are, beating up on a con-usa slate. |

I don't think it's so much he's afraid as it is his feeling about UT recruiting in Memphis. He's got a point when he says that he doesn't recruit Knoxville, but UT recruits Memphis and he doesn't want to give them a "sounding stage". I can't blame him for this attitude. Playing UT has helped his RPI though and I'm sure he knows that, but he could play others who would help his RPI who wouldn't be recruiting in Memphis. I don't think he has anything to worry about, when he gets the Memphis players that he wants anyway. I don't know if he knows it or not, but it's a lot harder to get into UT than UM. Cheeck ain't helping that situtation either, so Pastner has less to worry about than he thinks. I'm sure he knows how much the UT football game means to the UM AD budget and unlike the former coach, he knows he has a boss. The previous coach cost the UM a bunch of money with his arrogant approach to playing UT basketball in Memphis. I wish they didn't play in either sport - I went to both schools. |

It's just a no win thing for Memphis. For the most part, if they win....they're supposed to win and if they lose, they choked. Sort of like us and Vandy in football. But what I really think has him scared is Coach Martin. Because of his background and race, I think he could be a killer recruiter in big cities like Memphis....particularly compared to lilly-white pastner |

Remember, it is easier to get into UofM than it is UT. Knoxville is not an attractive place for the black kids in Memphis. They know that basketball is the major sport in Memphis and they like the notoriety of being the "only game in town". Martin has a tough nut to crack to get the Memphis kids in Knoxville. I don't think "scared of UT" enters into the picture here. The only reason RC Johnson wants this game is because of the football game. UT loses a lot of money playing the football game and if I were the AD at UT, I'd seriously look at not playing them in either football or basketball. Pearl liked the game because he thought he could recruit these kids, but the luck he had really didn't offset some million dollar losses. Playing it for the west Tennessee fans is a misnomer anyway for basketball - only a handful of tickets are available for UT fans. Some UT fans actually bought season tickets for Memphis football so they would be guaranteed a ticket for the UT game. That one ticket, I'm told was twice that of the C-USA games. Why would UT want to play the game??????? |

Pastner no longer has anything to fear. It was a tough job getting kids away from 25K a year checks, easy grades and hot and cold running Hos. It just got harder. We will get an occasional Memphis player but not many. |
