Newton Deal Turns Into Smear The SEC

SEC Knew Of Cam Phone Convo For 11 MONTHS?

Okay, now this Cam Newton deal has turned into a smear campaign against the SEC.

The national sports media wants to lock the SEC out of it's 5th straight National Championship. It is called football-envy. These writers would love to be able to write nice stories about their pitiful football in their own neck of the woods.

Last time I checked we live in America. In America, we practice capitalism. If someone wants to give Cam Newton 200k to come play football then he is worth it. And for some entity to deny him this is not only wrong but borderline criminal. Don't believe it has an impact on his bottom line? Go check Dez Bryant who was screwed out of a few million in the draft over a free training session.

Football is unique in its exploitation of players. I am a lot more tentative to make the "they should be paid" argument for other sports and here is why: In basketball and baseball you have a chance when you turn 18 to go pro and make a living using your talents. (I know the new rule for basketball but I disagree with it and you can still go to Europe if you have to)
In Football, you do not have this luxury. Instead you have to go play college ball. This sport MAKES you go to college before you can make a living playing the sport. (Yes the NFL is partially to blame and spare the CFL nonsense.) This sport makes you risk injury. This sport makes you risk flunking out of a school you shouldn't be in in the first place. This sport makes you jump unnecessary hurdles in order to capitalize off your own god give abilities. On top of this they are going to make millions of dollars off of you and disguise a "free education" as an equal trade. Nevermind, the fact that for a decent High School GPA in lottery states (like TN) you could have gotten that anyway.

If the NCAA ran the world Miley Cyrus would have to pass Geology at Vanderbilt before she could make records and TV shows. If she cant distinguish rock formations? Too bad so sad, go sell insurance.

Whenever you bring up the paying college football players argument you hear a lot of "you just can't do that" No one can tell you why you can't it is just "you can't do that. It is an amateur sport it would ruin it." Oh really? Check the Olympics. They operated under that guise for decades and finally came to their senses and allowed athletes to make money OFF THEMSELVES and are just fine.

If the NCAA isn't going to pay these guys fine, but do not prevent them from making money. Commercials. Video Games. Jersey Sales. That is theirs, not yours. Will some players make more than others? Yes. Im sorry that is how the world works. Get over it. Either give them an option at making money playing football instead of going to college or give them what they worth when they are there.

Sorry toots - it has nothing to do with any sort of smear campaign - several programs in the SEC have for one reason or another, caused the NCAA to take a look see..

As to the BCS championship game - Oregon and Auburn - they are the two (2) top teams - all each has to do is win the rest of their games..

Another school, historically known for handing out the cash chimes in:

Meanwhile, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who also recruited Newton out of Blinn, said he saw "nothing at all" out of the ordinary during that process.

"Our recruitment of Cameron could not have been better, or was just fine," Stoops said. "I didn't notice anything and none of our coaches did as we were recruiting him."

now this is the SEC daddy talking about Cam Newton - why on earth would ESPN bash is flagship? Could it be that toots doesn't believe ESPN is part of the national sports media?

If someone wants to give Cam Newton 200k to come play football, and he takes it, then he is worth it a professional.

Someone gave Hanesworthless 42 million to play football - and he sure as hell isn't worth it.

anyway college athletics, and football in specifics - how do universities decide how much to pay each player?

Interesting you using Dez Bryant as an example - somehow the NFL teams screwed him?

Schools that truly focused on the balance of scholarship athletes - and yes is a brutally expensive deal - limit the # of teams, understand and implement programs to raise large amounts of cash and use that money to make those teams very competitive, hire great coaches, great facilities, and the maximum number of allowable scholarships.

That is the answer to your series of questions.. Very few schools and even fewer people understand the simplicity of working with IX.

Dealing with title 9 is very simple....which is why it's a very simple answer to the question of why football players are never going to be paid. Officially, anyway.
