Thread That Makes Me Shake My Head About Our Fan Base

I was browsing various boards, as I do most days and saw this thread at the funny farm. Hot Tub Roy has been on the war path , as he has since his boy, Fill was fired. He has been posting his usual rumors and innuendoes regarding Derek Dooley and the Vols recruiting efforts.

I just shake my head at times, at how goofy some fans get over these things, especially recruiting. Recruiting is vital to our efforts, but just because we are not hearing our recruiting news being shouted out from Mount Everest, as it was during Kiffie pups, year in town, does not mean that these guys are not doing their job. They merely have a different preferred method of promoting the program.

I perused the linked thread and had to laugh at a poster who bashing some of our new coaches because they coached at other places that just were not SEC schools and said that a particular coach, Harry Hiestand, was not ready to recruit on the SEC stage...Bovine Scatology. Recruiting is recruiting. It is nothing other than selling yourself. We all do it every day in our lives. Harry Hiestand merely has to go into a recruits home, discuss the program, his coaching resume, his goals for the player, his opinion of the recruits future, and be honest about it. This is not rocket science.

Argument On Coaches Recruiting Efforts

Hot Tub Roy Stirring The Pot and Leading The Charge

I am still shaking my head.

Burning Man, 2009 FOREVER

I have no earthly idea what Dooley is doing, or not doing...and I'm not really all that concerned about it since I'm just resigned to us being awful and him being gone in 3 years anyway.

However, even considering the above: I still say Dooley's media blackout is a bad idea, and this is a consequence of it that is only going to get worse.

I agree that Dooley's media blackout is not a good idea. Someone is giving him some poor advice. This is not the 1960's and 1970's. This is the 2010's-modern day age of internet communications and public relations. There is a reason why top businesses have directors of communications/public relations.

There will be some rough times for Dooley and once he hits them, the media will remember how he shut them out. They will return the favor in-kind to him three-fold.

Mid-term grade report for Dooley Staff ...

Work Ethic - A
Coaching Experience - B+
Recruiting Experience - D
Generating Excitement for Recruits - D (somewhere in the realm of a cold McDonald's cheeseburger)
Discipline - C
Vision - D
Team Building & Team Unity - C
Ethics - B+

Compared with grade report for first season under Kiffin's Staff

Work Ethic - A
Coaching Experience - B
Recruiting Experience - A
Generating Excitement for Recruits - A
Discipline - C
Vision - B
Team Building & Team Unity - D
Ethics - F

Kiffin wasn't tremendous, overall and Dooley isn't a failure at this point. But, Dooley needs to pull his grades up significantly.

Roy was quoting a guy who's son plays for Whitehaven High School about the kid being contacted twice by UT coaches and one of the contacts was by e-mail. I heard the guy say it, so it's not hearsay. Now the flip side of that is that maybe the kid is not on a "high priority list" and that they are just staying in touch. However, the farther did say that Alabama had contacted the kid several times. I don't know if Alabama is interested in the kid or not, but Sabans method of recruiting is one where he gets a lot of guys interested in his program and then cherrypicks the offers.

Very little news is coming out of Knoxville about recruiting and these few contacts with this one kid could lead one to believe that recruiting may not be as high a priority as viewed by the other staff. I don't necessarily see it this way, but I can see where some could get that impression.

Dooley has said that he wants to recruit Memphis. The kind of talk coming from the farther may be a bunch of BS and maybe he was baiting us. But the info was passed on by Roy for good or bad and that is what a message board is - good and bad. I guess we can grade Dooley on his recruiting next February, huh?

By the way, the hot tub is no longer functional, the swimming pool has been filled in and a theatre room has been added along with a commercial kitchen. I never was privy to get the use of the tub and at my age, I'm not very interested.

I think you guys need to relax a bit and quit worrying......Just because you don't know what dooley's doing doesn't mean he's not doing it. He's developed his recruiting goals and it's eleven months until signing day. He closed darn strong in three weeks last year. What's more important right now is can we develop an offensive line, some depth at D-Tackle and find somebody to replace Rico at linebacker. I will be glad when spring ball starts so that the rumors like BBrown going to K State will go away. Brown's going to tear it up in the spring if he can get some space.......

TBH I'd rather not hear anything at all right now and start hearing stuff when spring ball gets started up. Less talk, more work is a good thing.
