With the proposed expansion of the Big Ten and PAC Ten conferences in the forefront, is and should the Southeastern Conference be looking into expansion? Even Notre Dame says that Expansion may force them to move into a conference. The expansions being discussed may cross traditional geographical boundaries that have historically tied some of the teams discussed to their traditional geographical rivals. Texas looking at the Big Ten, Colorado looking at the PAC Ten. The discussion of independent super conferences were first brought up 15-20 years ago as an alternative to working through the NCAA. The first ideas were to establish a 40 team super conference that would allow for a true collegiate football championship without interference from the NCAA. The expansion moves we are seeing were set off by the SEC's new super-TV deal with ESPN. They are searching for their own cash cow contract and national exposure. Does the SEC look to add more teams to the mix? Would they be able to re-work their SEC Network and ESPN package, say if they were to bring Miami, Florida State, and Texas A&M into the fold? |

I'd take UCF actually. I think they'd be a great addition to the SEC. The school itself is bigger than UF, they could provide some recruiting competition for FL eventually and it's close so I could go see a lot of other SEC teams. I'm all for it. |

Any expansion is about landing top teams from a large geographical area, that would enlarge the television demographics of the conference. This, it would make sense to land a south Florida team. As I stated before, a Texas team would make sense and no that I think about it, North Carolina and Virginia or Virginia Tech would make a lot of sense. it is not about having to few teams or too many teams. It is about dollars and eventually building towards a true national championship without congress or the NCAA interfering. |

there are lots of reasons why the 12 team conference works - 14 doesn't - neither does a 16 league. Never mind the dilution effect, i.e. money.. as to the ESPN deal with the SEC - compare that to the money the Big 10 pays out. The Big 10 is the place to be - money, demographics, etc.. Expanding the SEC by adding some south Florida team doesn't add viewers - so reworking the ESPN bit would be a no go.. Expansion is a bit more complex than it appears to be - and yep its academics.. Big Mike has done an excellent job, over the last 10 or so months breaking down conference expansions - focusing on the Big 10 and the PAC-10. Here is Frank the Tank's evaluation of the potential expansion of the Big 10.. and that 22 million per school is an eye opener too.. http://frankthetank.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/the-big-ten-expansion-index-a-different-shade-of-orange/ Edited by humbletx, Mar 14 2010, 02:57 PM.

They would if a super conference was being put together that eliminated the NCAA. If not, they would get left behind by the other schools and left holding an empty bag that could have been filled by cash. |
