That's what I am saying - you have to commit to it, it is not a gadget play, it's got to be a part of your offense to work. Gruden may not be coaching now, but he's an excellent football mind.

I do think it has even more place in college. However, again....we can't really be successful running it like the Etic Locke package. We'd need to run it for a couple of drives at least, much like what Bama did against them to put them away the other day.

I doubt we run it that much though, to be honest. We may see BB run it a couple of times, but I don't see Kiffin running it that much, not even as much as Bama runs it.

Gimmick or No Gimmick I don't care. If it works NOW in a game then I don't care if a DC can eventually adapt to it. WVU, UF, Utah, and other College teams have run this offense to NC's and 11+ win seasons. I have no doubt DC's can adapt to it just like they did to the Veer and to the Wishbone offenses of the 70's. But until they do, if you have a stable of TB's out the wazoo and several midgets with speed as UT has along with very suspect QB play thru the first half of the season, it would seem Common Sense to adapt to your talent and attempt to win games doing whatever it takes.

Now for the future years, I see many teams putting this into play for 10-12 plays a game as a change of pace. As long as you have the TB's and as long as you can average 4 yards a carry with an occasional big run out of it then why not. It also gives you the option for getting a monster play if the defense brings 10 men to the LOS and you can get the TB to get a pass off to a WR streaking past the only cover DB.

The single wing is making a comeback...thats pretty much what FL's offense is...I played in a single wing offense in the 60's and I just smile everytime I see the wildcat...

I watched Majors run the single wing and several Tennessee teams before him and the wildcat doesn't like like the single wing to me. But maybe the ball faking was better back then and the way they lined up is different also since they had a quarterback, fullback, wingback, and tailback who always took the snap in the shotgun. I loved watching the single wing run my Tennessee and I think most teams went to the T formation a long time before UT did.

Florida's offense is alot like the single wing, but spread out. The whole 'wildcat' deal is basically the single wing....and Monte responded to it exactly how one would defend a single wing, by loading the LOS. That's the reason the wildcat stuff is working right now, because defenses run 4 man fronts nowdays instead of 5 or 6 that they ran in the 40s and 50s. The answer to that is throwing, which is basically what separates the wildcat from the single wing: not many are actually going to let their full time RB throw the ball (because a) he aint a QB and really cant throw unless the reciever is open by...oh...20 yards, and b) even if he could, they dont want him to get whacked by the 9 man front after he lets go of the ball..).

Incidentally: Monte Kiffin is THE MAN. Just thought now was a good time to point that out... Either that, or he's one of the few DC's old enough to actually remember HOW to defend the single wing, spread out or not...

My HS ran the single wing my FR year then a new coach brought in the T formation, about the same time Dickey changed UT"s offense to T formation. Man we are old. HA These kids don't even know they are running the single wing again.

right on Zippy...he's tweaked it a little buts its pretty much the SW....the key is having a RB/QB that can run...if you dont have that it want work...the old SW had what we called a blocking back...he just cleared the way...
