Top Teams In College Football

If you look at the polls in college football, you will see teams with good records, but many of those teams are not even remotely the best teams in the nation.

You can not look someone in the eyes and can't a straight face and tell them that Cincinnati and Boise State are top 10 teams. Line those teams up against top competition week in and week out and let's see how they hold up. Those teams can win a big game with ample time to prepare and no solid teams to face in-between.

The Polls are truly a farce.

yep your right....media nerds, coaches that dont watch games and a freaking computer tell us who the best teams are.....its a joke...if they are gonna cram this crap down our throats at least wait after 5 games until they do it......If Vandy played in the Big East or WAC they would be ranked in the top 20 every year...

There is so much parody in college football I find it hard to know. On one hand a shitty ass team coached by Mark Richt can beat the snoticles out of Hawaii and then Utah or whoever the hell that was shoved a ramrod up Bama's booty. Granted talent is not to be seen on paper for some of these teams, but a combination of coaching, scheduling and the Cinderella effect seem to put an insatiable fire in their bellies. Anybody can beat any team on any day now. Well, except for Western Kentucky :D

The Polls are truly a farce.
The polls are a marketing technique to help news organizations get more eyes on their product. That's all. It generates fan interest and discussions, and makes some of the Davids out there feel (for a time) like they can compete with the Goliaths ...

TN would likely beat several teams in the top 25, but putting them there doesn't fit with the pattern that's been established ...

Teams playing cupcake schedules can get up for a one game showcase because they have weeks to prepare for that one game. When they have to play a tough brutal schedule, they are subject to upsets because of injuries and motivation problems.

There is no parity in college football. You want parity, look at the NFL.

* There is no salary cap in college football as there is in the NFL.

* There is no such thing as weighted schedules (based on previous won-loss records) in college football as there is in the NFL.

* There is no draft in college football as there is in the NFL (based on your won-lost record). The draft limits the people you have and who you get.

* There is no 54 man roster in college football as there is NFL.

* The NFL is a mirror image of socialism - dumbing down the best so they don't get too much better than the lowest common denominator.

The only thing holding down college football teams are the schools and their coaches themselves.

* College football teams can recruit and sign all of the very best talent in the land onto one team. There is nothing holding them back from signing the best talent other than the recruiting cap for one season(26-28?) and the total number of scholarships (85) Thats 30 more players on the team than NFL teams.

* College football teams and coaches can be as good as they want to be without having to use a weighted schedule, a salary cap, a short roster, and a draft that penalizes success.

The polls have always been a farce. Having some computer program along with OPINIONS about who are the best teams is the most absurd thing ever. That's why winning a NC has never meant that much to me. I just want to win the SEC where it's determined on the field.

That was well thought out insightful argument from the same person who said football teams couldn't play with any passion in their bellies for more than the first few plays of a game. ;)

just sayin....

I think a lot of that is true but if I were FLA or ALA I would not want to play TCU just now. I think they are for real.

Once upon a time, perhaps. Not today. Crazy year in NFL.

Colts 6-0
Saints 6-0
Broncos 6-0
Vikings 6-1

. . . and we haven't even gotten to the Patriots yet.

Rams 0-7
Titans 0-6
Buccaneers 0-7
Chiefs 1-6
Browns 1-6

. . . and we haven't even gotten to the Lions yet.

:D

True Tux, but there are scholarship limits which is the NCAA's attempt to bring some parity to the game. Phil Phulmer was a big believer in parity which is why we tended to play down to the level of our opponents. Unfortunately, the Richt, Sabear & the Urban Legend didn't return the favor.

85 total scholarships is not going to create parity like you see in the NFL. There is a big difference in 85 players and 54 players.

Nobody is stopping coaches from going out and signing the best players that they can. They don't have to wait around for 31 other teams to select a player before they can go get another player.

Programs are as successful as the coaches want them to be in regards to how aggressive and good they are as recruiters, how well they do in teaching skills and improving the skills of the players.

If you have a fat and lazy coach who believes in parity, then I will show you an underperforming program. I heard Lane Kiffin discussing this very concept on the radio tonight with George Plaster. He said that he can recruit who he wants and doesn't have to wait 31 picks before he gets who is left for him to pick from.

Now, there is more talented players today than ever before, but the cream always rises to the top. Nobody forces their own program to go on hiatus. When a program goes south, it is because the coach had not done his job on the recruiting trail. Everyone plays by the same recruiting rules and we see Southern Cal, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and Alabama up there.

USC, Texas, Oklahoma, and Bama all struggled for several years because of making poor coaching hires. They got back on track with new coaches who emphasized recruiting and teaching. Florida struggled for decades until they got a coach who decided to best utilize his talent. Our program went to hell because we had a coach who got lazy and arrogant.
