Keys To Beating Cocks

No, this is not some porn thread.... ;)

The keys as I see them to beating the Cocks.

1) Win the battle of the trenches n both sides of the ball...duh!

2) Defense must make South Carolina one dimensional. That means taking away their running game. Stop it, score some points, and tee off on Garcia.

3) Defense must take long ball away from South Carolina. They like to run their tall WRs on mismatches and take the DB deep. I suspect that we will take that away most of the time. Contain Garcia in the pocket and force him to do stupid things with the ball, as he will often do.

4) Run the ball on South Carolina. Run the ball and take away South Carolina's defensive strength-speed. South Carolina;s run defense is average at best.

5) Utilize play action and bootlegs, they are fast and over pursue to the ball. Keep them honest. Great week to break the Nukelear option. Limit mistakes.

6) Tight ends can cause a lot of damage on South Carolina. Use the tight end on the red zone to nullify their speed.

7) Special teams play has to be better. Our kick returns are looking much better. If we could only get something going on punt returns. Kick and punt coverage is precarious at best.

As you mention, SC's run offense and run defense can be had. Also, it's quite astute to note that Garcia has a long history of putting the ball places it shouldn't go. I think this is the game Berry breaks the NCAA record for int returns....because Garcia isn't disciplined enough to keep the ball away from him. We also seem very good now at covering deep passes and stopping the run....which would basically stop SC's offense cold.......

I don't know exactly why, but I think we win this game easily.....

Funny Jolly. I was just having bad thoughts about this game. I hope your intuition is right and not mine.

I think the biggest task ahead for the Vols is to avoid a let down. After playing Bama to the very edge of a win...I hope the Vols do not take their foot off the gas pedal. I know they have the 24 hour rule, but the Bama game had to be a tough pill to swallow. I hope they're at full speed emotionally, as well as physically, for the game Saturday night.

That said, if any staff can keep the players from coming out flat it's CLK and his coaches.

I'd be more worried about that if we won the game. I think these guys are excited that they outplayed the then number one team in the country and are eager to show what they can do.

I hope that's the case Jolly. I'd love to see them dismantle the Gas Pumpers Saturday night!

Agree completely. They had a bit of a letdown after UF, cant afford one here. SC is not Ohio.

Also, I think what may be the biggest key is Crompton. Not so much in what he does as in what everyone around him does. Crompton's play in the last 2.5 games has not been fully his doing. For the first time in his UT career, post Meachem anyway, he has gotten alot of help from his supporting cast. The receivers have been getting open, and when the ball is thrown to them they are catching it and actually making plays after the catch. Stocker, Jones and Moore have REALLY stepped up their games, and the patchwork undersized OL has blocked pretty well. That has to continue for the rest of the season.

You hit the nail on the head. If we play anywhere close to the level that we played at last Saturday then this should be a relatively easy win.

All evidence points to the players heads being in the right place. The Sunday practice and Kiffin taking their backs has reportedly got their heads into things.

Spencer Tillman Gives His Insights To The Game

Tillman is very complimentary of the job that Lane Kiffin did the past two games.

If we can contain Garcia within the pocket, we will force him to make some poor decisions. Garcia is at his best when he is able to get outside of contain and throws deep to one of his tall WRs.

I expect to see a lot of the Tennessee 2 Saturday.
