and it's going to be important, because while Kiffin will get a pass for this year due to Jon Crompton, he will be judged much more harshly if QB play continues to suck next year. I think our QB next year will be either Bray, or maybe a juco (Newton?). I just can't see Stephens being the guy because.... well...he can't beat out the wormburner, how good can he really be? Thoughts? I'd like to see Kiffin just go ahead and develop Bray and go with him. By 2011 he will be a really good one. |

Kiffin will not start a freshmen next year in the first game IMO. If Bray/freshmen were to start, it will be later in the year, when the freshman can make the proper reads. |

#1 - freshman/redshirt freshman QB's #2 - investment Starting with #2 - the University of Tennessee has made a huge investment in its football coaching - huge & until today I've not heard, or read anything about any coaching staff getting a "pass" - what ever that might be. Taking a pass can be measured in dollars - once again *why* Auburn is a game of interest.. #1 freshman/redshirt freshman QB's - looking around college football today (adding a gentle reminder that according to the tootsie this is the worst crop of HS QB's coming out in > 20 years) going in to another season with an inexperienced QB comes with a multitude of problems. Using USC (again Southern Cal being the template Kiffin is using) Barkley, Corp & Mustain - can't say these guys were unknowns coming out of HS - and after watching Corp play vs UDub - its easy to understand why Carroll went with a true freshman. How does this relate to Tennessee and and Bray - skipping over the 2010 season and hoping upon hope he'll be a good one in 2011? #3 Thoughts - once again *if* this staff is as good as folks want to believe - there should be a dramatic change in personnel over the next 2 seasons. |

He may start A freshman, but it depends on who the freshman is. Bray I dont think will be ready from day one if for no other reason than I doubt he can bench the bar... |

I think it's Bray. Remember 4 things- 1. Tyler Bray right now is the same size Erik Ainge was during his senior year in high school- 6-6 200 lbs. 2. Tyler Bray gets here in January as a mid-termer, while Erik Ainge did not. That gives him a leg up learning the playbook and getting into Ausmus' weight program. 3. Erik Ainge was coached by Phillip Fulmer and Randy Sanders. Bray will be coached by Lane Kiffin, Jim Chaney, and David Reaves. Who do you prefer developing a young QB? 4. Yet despite what would appear to be more advantages for Bray than Ainge, Erik Ainge started (well, co-started- would have started if there hadn't been another talnted freshman in the same class) from day 1 played as well as a freshman as any QB at UT on a team that won the East. His drive at the end of the Florida game to set up the winning FG was magnificent. That was his 2nd or 3rd game. So I don't see why Tyler Bray can't start as a freshman from day 1. I expect he'll be up to 220-225 by the time the season starts. Freshmen seem to be developing earlier and earlier nowadays. Edited by GregAmsler, Sep 22 2009, 11:15 AM.

I don't think there's any question that NS will not be the first-game starter. He is for all intents and purposes equal to what UT is putting on the field now. That's not very good. If Bray, Netwon or whomever comes in and goes through Spring practice, they will be the Day 1 starter. The argument "you can't start a true freshman QB" is hollow and has been debunked many times over. Spring practice and pre-season practice is more than enough time for a talented QB to be prepared to start, regardless of classification. |

Agree 100%. I also think our present QB situation is debunking that whole "he's a Senior, he knows the system" theory pretty nicely on it's own. |

I agree with GA VV and Cheffie. I think that if Bray has the tools he supposedly has AND he's here for spring practice AND he stays in knoxville all summer working out and ingesting the playbook (why not, his parents are apparently moving there) then he's the odds on favorite to start next year....unless we sign somebody better (which I doubt we will do)....... |

Bray has a long way to go physically before he is capable of finishing a year. I mean true enough, Erik Ainge did start as a freshman and he is a good comparison (physically speaking, anyway). But that also kinda makes my point: Ainge didnt finish the year. He got hurt. Granted, he got hurt on a stupid play call...but he wasnt capable of withstanding the punishment as a freshman. I'll be happy if I'm wrong about Bray, obviously....I just dont have much faith in an 18-19 year old stick-man being ready to go from Day 1. He may be 225 before next season kicks off, in which case I'd have a whole lot more confidence in him being able to handle it...but if that's the case, then he will have come a long way from where he is today. |

Have faith, Zippy. Aaron Ausmus will have almost 9 months between the time Bray enrolls and the 2010 season starts to add 20-25 lbs. to Bray's frame. That's not a strecth by any means.

No one said you "can't start a true freshman QB" - indeed it happens.. Peyton Manning started as a freshman - there are countless examples - UM is going with a true freshman - OU went to a freshman when Bradford went out - Southern Cal is going with a freshman.. Expectations for the team - well that is something different... |

The OL in 2010 is a concern too. Hope Cullen gets in, we need some experience at guard. |

Not until starter No. 1 and starter No. 2 went down with season-ending injuries, leaving the staff with two freshmen QBs from which to choose. Before the UGA game in 1994, Todd Helton had this to say to David Cutcliffe: "Coach, you know I'm a baseball player. I've tried, but I really haven't been paying attention. I really don't have any idea what to do. I can't go to Georgia and play quarterback." So who started the game at QB? Helton. And the next game at Mississippi State? Helton. Flummo wouldn't start a freshman RB (Jamal Lewis) in 1997 because he "doesn't know the blocking assignments." But he started a junior QB in 1994 who "doesn't have any idea what to do." You can't make this shit up. Edited by CCCP, Sep 22 2009, 01:11 PM.
