Did week 1 do anything to change your expectations for this team? 1. I know it was just WKU, but I think there were unexpected positives that came from the game...Teague's maturity, Crompton's confidence and command, the Oline being THAT dominant, the score being that lopsided...and I actually was impressed with the LBs. And the playcalling/intensity/coaching was all we hoped it could be. 2. I'm not sure Tennessee's opponents looked that great. South Carolina struggled. Georgia wasn't that impressive (although they did get hosed with some calls, but frankly, I didn't think OSU looked that great either). Auburn struggled with La Tech. I'll be interested to see how Ole Miss looks today. But to me, Florida and Bama are the only two I expect to lose. Georgia was a tossup in my mind before, but after yesterday, I'll favor UT at home in that one. I expect UT to beat Auburn at home even moreso than I did before. Same with South Carolina, who looks to have NO offense. Ole Miss is still a tossup to me...we'll know more about them in a few hours. I say 9-3, at worst, 10-2 is a definite possibility now. Thoughts? Have your expectations for the season changed? Am I being too optimistic? I know Warner will tell me I am.

This is a good topic for discussion. I can speak for myself, when I say that the results of the first game far exceeded my expectations. It does not however change my expectations for the season. I do realize that we have some serious flaws. This team does not have the depth, the experience, nor the talent to match-up well with teams like Florida and Bama. The coaching difference will help us stay in some games and make up the talent difference quickly. However, that is not enough to cover up the real deficiencies that we do have. Fans can not reasonably expect an opposing team to play poorly each week. Each team will build upon the positives and learn from the negatives in improving as the season unfolds. My expectations have and will continue to be that we win 8 games provided we do not suffer a plethora of injuries to our OL and LBs. |

Greg, welcome to the board first of all. My expectations have changed only slightly because I now think we can be even better than I thought we'd be, and I thought we'd be much improved. We had some pretty good guys coming back. Plus you add the coaching staff and its attitude, the physical conditioning, the mental discipline, the game plan, and I KNEW we'd be much better. Someone asked on VC about the Florida game. I responded that the score will be closer than many think and that there is a chance for an upset. Still believe that. |

Not really. I expected us to show marked improvement, but JC still has to be a bit of concern as well as special team coverage. I think 9-3 still, but honestly, I think I'm reserving judgement until after UCLA. It's hard for me to really judge because I think the score was 35-7 at the end of the third quarter. We honestly didn't give them all they could handle until the 4th. Which both worries me and encourages me. The worry part is obvious, but I'll tell you the really encouraging part was our S&C coaching. WE are vastly in better shape physically than last year. That was a real boon for me to see our guys still not winded after the half. Big big change there. |

Honestly they haven't. I still think we win eight games....but my score prediction was 38 to 3, so I am very pleasantly surprised by our offense. I pretty much expected our defense to do well, but that junior linebacker (thompson) completely caught me by surprise. Not only did he not do much last year....he name didn't seem to pop up much last spring or this fall. I still think we lose to Fl, Bammer, Ole Miss and either SC or Vandy. Another game or two like this one, and I might be willing to entertain beating both SC AND Vandy and winning 9. If Kiffie pulls this off, he needs to be the SEC coach of the year.... |

While expectations may or may not change. It is damn comforting to know that the formula being used has changed. The results achieved are different than what we are accustomed to. That is because the "X factor" has changed. |

First off, welcome Greg Amsler, always nice to get another good poster who wants to discuss football and not the length of the VolWalk and the sound system. My expectations haven't changed. I still think 8-4 will be a good regular season and 9-3 is ambitious. |

"My expectations have and will continue to be that we win 8 games provided we do not suffer a plethora of injuries to our OL and LBs. " I agree 100% . 8 games are where my expectations are , and will remain there. I also realize with an injury or two , to the ol or lb corp we could be in big trouble. Also with our depth at ol we could have problems in the 4th qtr or overtime games against teams that can go two deep with quality players |

My biggest change after week 1 is that I'm feeling much more confident against Ole Miss and Georgia ... particularly Georgia. Both of these teams performed worse than I expected, and Tennessee performed near the top of my expectations (Quarters 2-4). |

expectations is a strong word. I'd say.... I am more encouraged that we could pull off a 10-2 season. I predicted we'd beat UGA and lose to FL, Bama, and OM this year, but I think we can beat OM, and after seeing JC play much better, I think our D will keep us in the game with FL and Bama. |

Still think 9-3, but now I think 10-2 is very possible. If we have a injury and someone doesn't step up, could be 8-4. Fl, Bama, and Ole Miss losses, but OM looks beatable by us. |

My opinion has not changed. I think 8 wins are possible and would be a great season all things considered. We are in good hands with CLK and are headed in the right direction. WKU was not much more than a practice game. The staff knows we have plenty of room for improvement before UCLA. I think we beat UCLA. |

Did my expectations change? Sorta, yes and no. What I mean is that I really had no expectations at all. Before I sat down to watch the game on Sat, my wife (who doesnt watch football really, she tries but she just doesnt get it. I keep telling her I dont mind, she doesnt have to watch the game with me but she's a trooper...) asked me what I expected. My only answer was "well, Western Kentucky sucks eggs...but I have absolutely no idea what to expect out of Tennessee". What I had before the game was hope (/Obama off). I HOPED UT would look better coached. I HOPED the running backs would be workhorses. I HOPED Jon Crompton would not again be the worst quarterback in the history of organized football. I HOPED the DL and OL would with better fundamentals than they have the last .. oh... 10 years. You know, I hoped we would just kinda play pretty well. I HOPED UT would win 8 or 9 games this year. Whats changed is that my hopes have become expectations. I now expect us to actually play fairly well on a weekly basis, and I expect us to win 8 or 9 games. I still think UF and Alabama are just better than we are, but I'm not sure about anyone else (I didnt watch Ole Miss play on Sunday). edit: oh, forgot my kool aid. I expect us to go 14 and 0, and outscore our remaining opponents 974-3 Edited by Zippy, Sep 7 2009, 07:24 PM.

With the depth issues we have at LB and offensive line expecting more than 8 wins from this team is unfair to the coaching staff and players. Having said that I am very encoraged with team discipline, conditioning and motivation. It has been YEARS since I have watched a Tennessee team play with the passion that this team played with Saturday. I am also very impressed with the play calling, how the selection of plays kept WKU on their heels all game long. And was most impressed when B Brown was pulled after the 30 yard or so gain and coach Gran got dead into his ass for running out of bounds. We have missing this kind of coaching for 16 years. We may not see any more wins this year......but 2-3 years of this coaching staffs recruits and I am certain we can expect championship football in Knoxville. Just my 2 cents worth. |

Excellent post Warthog , I don't see anything that I could disagree with . An injury or two on the ol and we are in big trouble . |
