AstroTurf working with UT to study sports surfaces Interesting that the UTAD has hired AstroTurf to conduct a study comparing grass to synthetic surfaces in regards to health, injuries, and performance. I am a grass guy. I played on the old artificial turf and frankly, it sucks shit covered donkey balls. My back always hurt and I tore my knee to shreds on it. Football was meant to be played on grass. I don;t care if it is muddy or dry as a bone. Grass is king. |

My son has played on the newer synthetic grass.... bad news - it gets really hot good news - it's much more like real grass than the old stuff where they layered concrete and foam. Your feet don't get planted like the old stuff where knees get torn up and it's not like getting tackled on a concrete floor covered with carpet. The local HS put it in...and it costs a lot, but the resulting savings in maintaining the field saves dollars over the long haul and it always looks great. I'm sort of a traditional grass guy myself.....but this stuff is eons better than the old astroturf..... |

I doubt they switch back ... just like fake turf, the "technology" of the new grass systems has improved as well, both in terms of maintenance and resilience. Cushion is important, but until they figure out a way to get fake turf to break apart and give way (like a divot), then it will always be inferior with regard to injury. |

It has these little pellet doo-dads that do give the same feel as the grass giving way. My son said it's kinda wierd at first cause the pellets can hit you in the face if you're making a low tackle.... |
