Could UT’s Berry exact Peyton’s Revenge? Frankly, the Heisman is notbhing more than an award for hype and named by ABC/ESPN......hmmmmmmmm......ESPN.....SEC.....hmmmmmmmm. Interesting. :$ |

Peyton's revenge? Unfortunately for Manning the Heisman isn't a career award - and losing to Florida didn't help in 97. was his 97 season worthy - compared to the winner of the Heisman? "What if" Kiffin and his band of merry men put Berry in the position to things like the 97 winner? The Heisman and nothing more than hype - well, tell that to a guy named Roger, or Herschel, or Bo. There is a long and rather illustrious list of Heisman winners - |

oh hell yes. There were probably 5 or 10 players who were just as worthy...if not more so...than the actual winner. The criteria for the heisman is a moving target, btw. Some years its about being the best player on a shitty team, some years its about being the best player on the best team, some years its about character, some years it's a lifetime achievement award. 1997 was the 'best player not named Manning' criteria... And oh yes, I'm still bitter as hell about that one. Guilty as charged. Couldnt tell you the name of anyone who has won it since, except for Tebow. Just havent paid any attention to it at all; its just a stupid contest about who is more popular with the otherwise inconsequential talking heads... |

You are correct in that Manning did not have the kind of breakout season most expected him to have in 1997. The award was given that year based solely on hype from ABC/ESPN. The award once meant something. But around the late 1980's the award was given to whom ABC/ESPN promoted and hyped the most. It became a farce. As JV pointed out, there is not a solid criteria used to judge these guys. It is all about who gets hyped the most. |

I always thought that the best response on the hypesman was uttered by Cooper, Peyton's older brother: " Peyton deserved the Heisman, but the Heisman didn't deserve peyton!" |
