Neyland's renovations are looking pretty good. But more than the renovations, I was thrilled to see we are FINALLY doing something with the JumboWaste. That board has never been anything but a platform for ad revenue. And that's all well and good for a university but as I've screamed about for years, the primary function for Jumbotrons, Diamondvision boards, whatever... is to serve the fan...us...the people buying the tickets...the same people they're trying to have buy the products advertised on the board. Even its original design was flawed...an embarrassment, if you ask me. In day games, you could barely see the relevant numbers. You could see the team names, but that was about it. Down and distance, score, etc...good luck. I remember the UTAD raving about the board, and how it was the biggest this and that. Big deal. Go to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State and many, many more. They get it...and they've not had to have a major re-do. Maybe this time, UT gets it right. And maybe, just maybe, they figure out a way to put something similar in the north endzone...somewhere...anywhere! Most everyone in the south endzone that can't see the board - and I'm just guessing here - would love to have the same view of stats, replays, etc. Again, I'm just guessing here. B-) And by the way - I'm meeting North Dakota State's football coach, Dave Bohl, tomorrow (will have him and the basketball coach Saul Phillips on my program this fall). Considering the slow and steady rise in the D-1 ranks NDSU has been experiencing the past two years, I'm going to ask him if he would ever view a trip to Knoxville as one that would appeal to him and the program. I'm guessing his answer will be yes. Football has beaten Minnesota and schedules both Big Ten and Big 12 every year now, basketball is going big-time (played Kansas great in the NCAA tourney this year) and women's sports have made major headway in D-1. Go Vols! Man, I'm really getting itchy for football up here in Fargo!! |

Maybe I dreamed this but I seem to recall the wittle bitty Jumbo-Ad-Tron at UT was built with money fronted by a Paul Allen group (one of the original Microsoft guys along with Gates). It was supposedly put up for amost free but they then had to sell their soul to the Paul Allen group who got the lions share of the ad revenue. Now is this a true story or did I dream this up? |
