Sometimes all it takes is a 2015 Womens New Balance few small changes to improve a shoe. This was the case with the Hoka Clifton 2, which I reviewed earlier this week. Hoka added a bit of padding to the tongue, an additional lace eyelet, and a new insole, but kept just about everything else on the shoe the same. Fix what¡¯s broken, don¡¯t change what people like ¨C that¡¯s how it should be done.Last year I reviewed the New Balance Fresh Foam 980 and found that although I liked the shoe, it suffered from a fatal flaw that made it unwearable for me on longer runs. The problem was the toebox ¨C it was too pointy up front and squeezed my toes together. The result was blistering between my toes on long runs, and going up a half size did not solve the problem. I¡¯ll end this post by putting in another plug for Blaise and Sean¡¯s course ¨C it was a phenomenal experience, and one that I won¡¯t soon forget. If you want to read a bit about their philosophy, they have a short book that goes over many of the things that I have discussed in this post ¨C you can order it from their ntro from Pete: Jon Gugala contacted me a few weeks ago asking if I had any interest publishing a few posts on vintage running shoes. Jon is a freelance journalist, a collector of old/vintage running shoes, and clearly a much more fashion-conscious guy than I am. After first reading the article below, I realized that I¡¯m guilty of nearly every fashion faux-pas that Jon points out. I¡¯m OK with that, my days of needing to look New Balance 996 Mens Sale fashionable are long gone (with three kids, the phrase ¡°social event¡± has little meaning to me these days!). That being said, I must admit to being a bit intrigued by the idea of getting a pair of vintage shoes, and I¡¯ve been noticing them more and more on the feet of people just a bit younger than me (well, maybe 10+ years younger). You won¡¯t find me in skinny jeans anytime soon, but I could see a pair of vintage shoes working their way into my collection¡. The scientists took 100 individuals, split them into two equally sized groups, and had them perform a series of exercises on a weekly basis in either Nike Free shoes or a conventional running shoe (for a duration of 6 months). The exercises included running, aerobics, skipping, and a variety of other things. They were also allowed to wear the shoes in everyday life if they so chose. They took a variety of measurements before the initiation of the study, including toe flexor strength (toe flexion is downward bending of the toes), range of motion of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint (i.e., the joint at the base of the big toe/hallux), and the active path of motion of the same joint. They also took a subset of 25 individuals assigned to wear the Nike Frees and took MRI¡¯s of the lower leg and foot to obtain information about muscle cross-sectional area (think of this as muscle belly size for simplicty¡¯s sake). 13. Simply increasing cadence (stride rate) may provide positive benefits in terms of joint loading. For example, Heiderscheit et al. 2011 showed that running with a faster cadence/higher stride rate (5-10% increase) reduced loading on the knee and hip, allowed for a more level carriage of the center of mass (less vertical oscillation), shortened stride length, and created less braking impulse. Read my post on the Heiderscheit paper here. 5. Many running injuries are associated with some kind of change in a runner¡¯s training. Could be a change in shoes, running surface (e.g., running on the treadmill all winter then resuming the same mileage on the roads when it warms up, mileage, volume of speedwork, etc). I¡¯m also impressed by how the 1500 looks ¨C my pair in gray is fairly subdued, but in a good way. It¡¯s a shoe that can be used casually without making it look like you¡¯re about to run a 5k.The sole of the 1500 is pretty firm, and not very resilient. I often find this to be the case with New Balance¡¯s RevLite midsole foam (though not in the 1400 v2 for some reason). For longer, slower miles it feels kind of dead, but the ride improves when you pick up the pace (this is kind of ho New Balance 996 Womens Sale w I felt about the NB 1600 and the Skechers GoMeb Speed 1 and 2). For that reason I would not personally consider this shoe for a marathon, but it would work well for a 5K or maybe even a half. It¡¯s also a shoe that can handle speed work. The main issue though is that for the same purposes you can get a lighter, flashier shoe in the 1600. My guess is the 1500 was made for those who wouldn¡¯t consider the 1400 or 1600 due to the lack o New Balance Mens uk f stability elements (mainly a marketing move if you ask me). |
