Petraeus Confirms Link Between Israel-Palestine and U.S. Security

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article25010.htm

"Insufficient progress toward a comprehensive Middle East peace. The enduring hostilities between Israel and some of its neighbors present distinct challenges to our ability to advance our interests in the AOR. Israeli-Palestinian tensions often flare into violence and large-scale armed confrontations. The conflict foments anti-American sentiment, due to a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel. Arab anger over the Palestinian question limits the strength and depth of U.S. partnerships with governments and peoples in the AOR and weakens the legitimacy of moderate regimes in the Arab world. Meanwhile, al-Qaeda and other militant groups exploit that anger to mobilize support. The conflict also gives Iran influence in the Arab world through its clients, Lebanese Hizballah and Hamas."

In any event, Petraeus’ willingness to publicly — and in uniform with all those decorations on his chest — make the connection between Israeli treatment of the Palestinians and the spread of “anti-American sentiment” and the deterioration of the U.S. position in the region — a connection which, of course, is completely evident to any casual observer of Middle East — marks what can only be considered a major breakthrough in the debate over the relationship between the United States and Israel.

But HERE's the kicker!

And now that the neo-conservatives, staunch supporters of Bibi Netanyahu, have built up Petraeus as the greatest U.S. military commander since World War II, and, thanks to Bill Kristol, a presidential candidate to die for, how will they react? Remember, Petraeus is due to receive the 2010 Irving Kristol Award at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in May!

So? That too is politics in its base form-read the memoirs of Cicero [ he lived around the time that Julius Ceasar was a member of the Roman Senate] -and see as to whether anything has changed in trying to elevate our 'war heroes' to a desirable civilian standard?

Politics IS and always WILL be a dirty biz :bgrin:

The American's can't have it both ways on this issue.

If they are going to let Israel do whatever they want, the U.S. must sit back and say quietly that they support Israel all the way. The U.S. will have to stop trying to pretend that they are brokers of peace and that they are trying to help the Palestinians. Drop the facade.

OR, they can tell the Israelis that if they do not listen to their demands there will be SERIOUS consequences and a break in the friendship. The U.S. must follow through if they are ignored. That would mean going against the Jewish lobby in America.

I don't think either will happen.

Petraeus hasn't said anything that wasn't known to anyone in the middle east. In fact others have said it before, the Isreali/ Palistinien conflict is the root of all trouble in the middle east but know the unspeakable truth has been spoken by the highest ranking American soldier.

In these modern times, I don't see Isreal as being a necessary strategic military ally in that region. Isreal will not allow the USA to build a military base in their country, though the US tax payers anti up 2.5 billion a year on welfare for Isreal and part of that 2.5 billion helped pay for building those new settlements that have the Americans upset about. The USA fought a long war with Iraq without Isreali support.

But, I think this little lovers spat will go away in a few days and it will be back to business as usual. Isreal practically owns US politics. Any person in the US that wants to become president has to publicly announce his/her alligence to Isreal or the game is over.
