NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE – Premier Dalton McGuinty has given his strongest hint yet that unpaid days off are looming for public sector workers as the government fights a $24.7 billion deficit this year.

McGuinty told the Ontario Chamber of Commerce annual economic summit that government workers have been "sheltered" in the recession.

"The issue is how can we contribute to the solution," he replied when asked about the possibility of "Dalton Days" for public sector employees.

"I like the alliteration but we're going to have to sit down with our public sector partners," he told an audience of business and academic leaders.

"People inherently want to do the right thing and sometimes the right thing is not the easy thing to do."

Former NDP premier Bob Rae did a similar thing during the early 1990s recession, with the time off known as "Rae Days." They infuriated labour but Rae reasoned that the idea was better than wholesale layoffs.

This could be the nail in the Liberals coffin.
