Hi, Y'all ~ My wife and I use the computer but with different nicknames. A couple of days ago, I was in my side of the computer when the cursor when dead; I can't get it to move by threat or treat. The problem, however, is confined to just my side of the computer; indeed, my wife's side is acting just like new, which is why I'm able to post the SCREAM for help! Do any of you know what I can do to get my cursor to to work again? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, RO |

Usually, when my 'puter does something "funny" (in other words, I've not got a clue as to whats going on- as per usual lol) I do a "disccheck": go to My Computer right click on local disc C: right click on Properties click on Tools click on error checking check off the lower box (there are two-the upper box requires a restart. Sometimes it helps to clean-up the useless files that are floating around on the 'puter and that option is found in the main menu under Accessories. All this can be done from the "wife's side"; it sounds to me that you have a pconflict problem in the "Administration" could be a corrupted file under the password section, but then with MS operating system it could be just about anything! My NEXT 'puter is going to be a "Mac" for sure! |

Do you mean cursor or mouse pointer ?????????? What operating system are you using and what version of browser are you using. Are you on dial up or high speed. The primary reason your cursor locks up is because you computer is trying to process the data it has received. If you have a lot of junk files on your computer, your computer will plow through all of that junk which causes your computer to run very slow. When was the last time you did a system cleaning. If you do a lot of web surfing, your computer will accumulate a lot of useless files. Even cashe cleaning will help. If you are using windows 98, 2000, or XP, double click on ''my computer'' icon on your desk top, then single click or high light your C drive icon when my computer window opens. Then right click on your high lighted c drive icon and a drop down menu will appear and then click on properties. A local c disk properties window will open and in the middle of that window is a large icon of your c drive and beside it is a button labeled ''disk clean.'' Click on that and wait for the results of the scan. When all of the results are listed, then follow the instructions if you want to clean out the junk. When thats done, do a ''disk defrag'' for good measure when you are still in the cleanup mode. OR, click on start....programs....acessories....system tools...... disk clean, up and wait for the results and follow instructions. Good luck. Edited by Bruce, Nov 4 2009, 11:21 AM.

Hi, Y'all ~ I have a Compaq Notebook CP with an Athlon Dual-Core processor. In my account, neither the cursor nor any of the keys on the keyboard operate. If the computer goes into 'sleep mode,' even pounding on the touch pad with a ten pound blunt object will not awaken the &%^#$@ machine! Consequently, I can do nothing except stare at my wallpaper; nothing works. This problem does not exist in my wife's account; indeed, it is working perfectly. Unfortunately, I made myself the administrator of the computer, but it will not accept my password when I type it in from my wife's account. I'm beginning to believe that my side of the computer is closely related to HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey. Is there any way to kill my account from my wife's side of the maching? Thanks, RO |

The problem you are having is very common to Americans that use their computers to bad mouth Canadians. What operating system are you using. Do you have a good spyware and virus program. You may have picked up some mal-ware. Changing the admin password will not solve your problem. Something is causing your account to lock up. There are settings that will prevent your computer from going into sleep mode. How soon does this happen after you sign in. |

Bruce: My computer uses Vista. Norton is my anti-spy, et cetera protection. All the controls freeze the instant I bring my account up. RO |

I'm also going to assume that along with your anti virus program, you also have an anti spyware program. They are similar but look for two different kinds of bugs. My first guess is you have a Mal-ware problem, which is a vicious kind of bug that seizes control of your browser and you go nowhere. So lets start with the easiest first. Boot your computer in ''safe mode.'' Restart the computer. Immediately after the screen goes blank for the first time, or after the BIOS post ends, start taping the ''F8'' key repeatedly. The Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If the menu does not appear, restart the computer and try again. If the Keyboard has a F-Lock key, it may be necessary to press it first - QUICKLY before pressing the F8 Key. This will have to be done quickly before tapping the F8 key repeatedly. The Windows Advanced Options Menu shown next should appear. Page up to the top of the menu to ''safe mode'' and hit enter. The screen should display your desk top after a fiew minutes, don't worry if you desk top icons are arranged differently, that will straighten out later. You may need your admin password to get into safe mode, but try both ways. When you are in safe mode, get to your spy ware program and do a full scan, when done, do a full scan with your anti virus program also. This will take some time so be patient. When both scans are complete just do a normal reboot to get back to your Vista page. Good luck and remain optimistic. |

Hey, we were just getting started. Vista operating systems have an awful systemic problem with sleep mode. That was going to be step number two. |
