Clerics defy leader on Iranian election Association breaks silence, siding squarely with reform movement July 05, 2009 Michael Slackman Nazila Fathi NEW YORK TIMES CAIRO – The most important group of religious leaders in Iran has called the disputed presidential election and the new government illegitimate, an act of defiance against the country's supreme leader and the most public sign of a major split in the country's clerical establishment. The statement by the Association of Researchers and Teachers of Qum represents a significant, if so far symbolic, setback for the government and especially the authority of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The government has tried to paint the opposition and its top presidential candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, as criminals and traitors, a strategy that now becomes difficult – if not impossible. "This crack in the clerical establishment and the fact they are siding with the people and Mousavi, in my view, is the most historic crack in the 30 years of the Islamic republic," said Abbas Milani, director of the Iranian Studies Program at Stanford University. Since the election, the bulk of the clerical establishment in the holy city of Qum has remained largely silent. But with its statement yesterday, the clerics' association – formed under the leadership of the revolution's leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini – came down squarely on the side of the reform movement. Also yesterday: * An adviser to Khamenei accused Mousavi of treason. Hossein Shariatmadari said Mousavi was a "foreign agent" working for the United States. * Mousavi released documents that he says detail a campaign of alleged fraud by supporters of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that assured his re-election. The documents accused Ahmadinejad supporters of handing out cash bonuses and food, increasing wages, printing millions of extra ballots and other acts in the run-up to the vote. * Newsweek correspondent Maziar Bahari, a dual Iranian-Canadian citizen, has been charged with "agitating against the ruling system and acting against national security." He remains in custody. With files from The Associated Press ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is a significant change in Iranian politics. It's getting interesting.

Hi, Y'all ~ We should not involve ourselves in the problems confronting the Iranians concerning their contested election. Let's keep our CIAs and MI6s and every other intelligence service out of that nation's dilemmas. The conundrums we create could come to haunt us for generations to come. Does this world really need more problems than it already has? RO |

I agree with Orney --- SLACKMAN"s rant is pure Bullshit-- the Religious leaders congratulated the wee fella after the recount that still showed jeenyjad won by a land slide. The pathetic burst of Diarhrea from CNN was only to be expected ---- It over shadowed the US sponsered military coo in South America aye -- What do you expect from a name like Slackman and the New York Times; already? -- Pork and Bacon? aye er eh?
