This is the former Convent on the main Island, of which there are three, the other two including St. Josephs, which is closed to the public and where Dreyfus was held for the majority time of his exiled punishment, have become absolutely overgrown and are wildlife refuges now. This is the Chapel: there is only one cemetery, and it only holds the remains of the children who died on the Island- all of them dependents of the jailers, all other bodies were fed to the sharks, which are STILL plentiful around the Islands, and swimming there is NOT advised!  these are some of the cellblocks for the "Trustees"

Thanks for the pics, Jabs. That is history that interests me, and you were fortunate to have been there. I am out of step with these thoughts, but I thought that penal colony was a good place to put serious criminals. I wish Canada put one of these up near the north pole... for prisoners like Bernardo!

Yeah, and a few other ones. Clifford Olson, maybe Omar Khadr if we are stupid enough to accept him. Good place for his Mom and other relatives too. But where the heck is Devils Island? |
