Headphones blamed for permanent hearing damage

A new report has found 60 per cent of Australians risk permanent damage to their hearing by listening to music at unsafe levels through headphones.

The Australian Hearing report shows 70 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds have suffered from tinnitus - or ringing in the ear - and 25 per cent of them believe hearing loss repairs itself.

Professor Harvey Dillon says too many people ignore the warning signs of hearing loss.

"If you're in a situation where someone has to raise their voice to be able to communicate with you, that's a potentially damaging noise," he said.

"To limit the amount of exposure you have to it, if you're listening through an MP3 player, it's all under your control - so just turn it down.

"If you're at a venue you might want to move to a quieter place ... if you get hearing loss you often end up with tinnitus almost non-stop.
