STAR Trek star George Takei is to tie the knot with long-time partner Brad Altman after California overturned a state ban on same-sex marriages, the actor wrote on his website today.
Takei, 71, known to millions of fans as Mr Sulu, said on a blog posting that he was "overjoyed" that the way was now clear for him to marry Altman after a 21-year relationship.

"Our California dream is reality," Takei wrote. "At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!"

Takei, who more recently has appeared on US television show Heroes, said he and business manager Altman were now busy making wedding plans.

"For now, Brad and I are enjoying the delicious dilemma of deciding where, when, and how we will be married," he wrote. "Marriage equality took a long time, but, like fine wine, its bouquet is simply exquisite."

In a landmark ruling last Thursday, California's Supreme Court quashed a ban on gay marriage, effectively leaving same-sex couples in America's most populous state free to tie the knot.

Although the decision will not take effect until 30 days from the ruling, state officials have been inundated with requests for marriage licenses from gay and lesbian couples.
