Six Utah miners missing after earthquake collapses tunnel August 07, 2007 12:00am Article from: Agence France-Presse SIX workers were missing after a tunnel collapsed at a US coal mine in a remote part of the western state of Utah following a nearby earthquake, police said overnight. An official from Emery County sheriff's office said six men were unaccounted for following the accident at the Genwal Mine in Huntington Canyon, around 190km southeast of Salt Lake City. The cave-in occurred around 3.50am local time, the official said, around one hour after a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck less than 32km away. Sheriff's officials were not able to provide information on the number of workers underground at the time of the collapse. However Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon told local KSL radio the missing men were believed to be up to 900 metres underground when the cave-in occurred. "I've heard several different versions about how far they are, but I know it's at least 2000 feet to 3000 feet (600 to 900 metres). They should all be together," Sheriff Guymon said. Genwal mine produces coal for local utility Rocky Mountain Power, who have sent rescue crews to the mine according to local reports. |
