I don't regret Haneef decision, says Kevin Andrews

August 05, 2007 10:34am
Article from: AAP

IMMIGRATION Minister Kevin Andrews said today he had no regrets about the way he handled the Mohamed Haneef case.

The Indian doctor returned home to India a week ago after a charge of supporting a terrorist organisation was dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Mr Andrews' decision to earlier cancel Dr Haneef's visa on character grounds has subsequently come under fire.

Mr Andrews today said he had had a lot of tough times in his years in politics and the Dr Haneef case was no different.

"I don't have any personal regrets," he told ABC television.

Mr Andrews said the hardest thing was being privy to information which he felt justified his decision – information which could not be publicly released because it was part of an ongoing police investigation.

He reiterated that he felt he made the right decision under immigration legislation.

Mr Andrews said he still felt Dr Haneef's behaviour throughout the ordeal "has been suspicious".
