Aussie models taking fame in their stride

THIS week's haute couture catwalk shows in Paris are the grand final of fashion.

And while the A-list front row seats will be reserved for the world's fashion elite, backstage Australians are taking over.

Even in the biggest couture show - John Galliano's Christian Dior 60th anniversary parade - Australian models will be a big part of the fixture.

Following in the footsteps of Gemma Ward and Catherine McNeil is Mosman teen Alexandra Agoston-O'Connor who is taking stardom all in her stride.

Spotted by talent scouts two years ago, Agoston-O'Connor spent time overseas before deciding to put her fashion career on hold to sit the HSC last year.

Now she has deferred a place at university while she tries modelling once more.

Last year she did 26 catwalk shows at New York Fashion week and tonight will be just one of a few Australians playing a part in the Dior show.

And there is another strong Aussie connection to Dior, with Erica Baxter recently wearing a $100,000 Dior wedding dress when she married James Packer.

Baxter and her mother-in-law Ros Packer are tipped to be in the front row for the show which will take place in Versailles palace and promises to be a stellar launch for the week-long couture shows.

For Agoston-O'Connor - known in fashion circles as Alex A - even though she is working for some of the world's top fashion houses, nerves are not something the 19-year-old thinks about.

"I am not really nervous, I am kind of happy with the way I am and who I am," she said.

It will be the second time she has starred for Dior after appearing on the runway in January this year, along with parades for Christian Lacroix and Franck Sorbier.

"It's going really well for me (in Paris). I have to pinch myself sometimes to actually believe that I am here," she said.

And with international status also comes the big dollars.

Couture shows can pay thousands, eclipsing the couple of hundred models receive for a walk down a local runway.

Rising international fashion star and fellow Australian McNeil will also appear on the Paris catwalks this week.

The New York-based, French Vogue cover girl, who is one of the faces of Dolce & Gabbana's D&G label, is being considered - but has not been confirmed - for a place on the catwalk by a raft of high-end designers.
