Terrified drivers dodged 'bombs' on highway By Peter Rolfe August 05, 2007 12:00am Article from: Sunday Herald Sun VICTIMS of a dangerous highway rock-throwing attack have spoken of their terror at having their cars bombarded by youths. At least nine cars were damaged and up to 30 people were lucky to escape death and serious injury on Friday night, when a group of teenagers threw rocks on to the busy Princes Highway at Laverton. A rock the size of a brick smashed through the side window of a taxi, narrowly missing a passenger's head. Another hit the car of an elderly couple towing a trailer, and several struck cars carrying children. Werribee mother-of-two Clare Noblett was on her way to visit a friend when a rock shattered her windscreen at about 7.50pm. "There was just this huge loud noise like a firecracker had gone off in the car, a really loud bang," she said. "And then I was covered in glass and there was a big hole in my windscreen." The rocks were thrown from behind safety barriers near Fitzgerald Rd. Motorists watched helplessly as the youths continued to strike cars from hiding spots along the highway, in the 20-minute rampage. Thousands of dollars of damage was caused to car panels, bonnets and windscreens. Police used a helicopter, thermal imaging cameras and a dog squad to search the area, but did not catch the offenders. Sgt John Clark, of Williamstown police, said motorists were left shocked and scared by the incidents. Police have appealed for witnesses to the attack to help their investigation. Phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. |
