Hi Tessa and all,

Thank you greatly for the new thread and subsequent opportunity for some old-skool reviews.

The following is based largely on game play as opposed to story *clears throat* hehe! I haven't written a gaming review before now so I hope it isn't too vague!

If you want to pin it fine, if not, also fine. ;)

Tomb Raider Two - The Dagger of Xian

TR2 was my first experience of the Tomb Raider franchise - purchased after I exhausted all ten levels of a shareware game entitled Nitemare 3D.

I was excited by the images on the box and eager to try out another game that boasted a three-dimensional environment with a capacity for great exploration. But to my dismay, my PC back then was unable to support the game. So like any budding enthusiast I bought a new PC simply to afford me the luxury of playing this fantastic game!

After a few hours spent trying to figure out the controls on the PC I was still happy just exploring TR2's manor. When I felt I had enough basic control skills I loaded the game and watched as a short FMV played out lara's deliverance to the Great Wall of China.

To a novice, a simple jump from one platform to another can be quite a "Hit and miss" and I failed to make the very first required jump for quite some time - instead falling into a presipice and being nobbled by one of two tigers that appear during this level's initial area.

The feat before me was to ascend to a gatehouse on the actual Great Wall but it took me several hours to accomplish due to my gaming ineptitude at that time.

I soon found myself progressing, however, because most of the early movements that Lara was capable of were required early on in the game - jumping, pushing/pulling objects, swimming, grabbing and opening doors plus the inevitable use of weapons - were forcibly learned pretty much from this first level...including shimmying and speed runs.

The ensuing levels were simply awesome and aesthetically, very pleasing. From China, Lara visits the ever-colourful Venice, then onto such places as Tibet, an offshore oil rig, and an underwater shipwreck before finally returning to Croft Manor which is a level (end level), in itself.

The purpose of her mission? To retrieve a covetted and powerful dagger from ancient times and to race her arch enemy, Marco Bartolli, to it's final resting place..a temple that may look appetising but is wrought with a great many traps and dangers.

When finally Lara retrieves the dagger from Bartolli (who has since executed it's powers and changed into something quite different!), Lara returns to Croft Manor.

The only trouble is, she hears intruders and burglary alarms....the final battle is not yet won.

TR2 was fun, though some hardcore gamers say otherwise. I think that's the one when I threw my first flare. That really set me off!

TR1 was my first exposure. St. Francis Folly was really fun! I also liked the Atlantean pyramid level despite not understanding some of the storyline (I was 5 at the time)

LR was like an archaeologist's dream. A fantasized and amazing adventure in Egypt with living mummies, Egyptian curses, and the war of Set and Horus - what more can you ask?! ^_^

Hi, Sing,

I think some so-called "Hardcore" gamers are quite subjective and they can have a tendency to pre-judge or indeed judge per se on graphics and such as opposed to quality gameplay, sadly.

I actually find a lot of the next-gen games quite bland in terms of coulour. Everything looks so dull - much unlike levels from earlier games such as TR2. Who could ever forget that vibrance of Venice? It was so colourful! Just because certain things appeared unrealistic (like the trail Lara's boat leaves in the water), didn't make it any less challenging nor appealing. It had real ambience.

I loved the birdsong and the fact the sun seemed to be beating down, making all the canopies bright and the buildings so warm :)

*Feels ears burning*
I'm one of those "hardcore" gamers who think otherwise.
TR2 was good, but it was ruined by being wall-to-wall henchmen and non-stop gunfights. The constant requirement to fill people with lead gets really tedious and has forever diluted the atmosphere. Everything that made the original so great is present in the sequel - the exploration and huge levels - but the endless gunplay completely detracted from it and just left the sound of gunfire ringing in my ears. If they'd reined that in, the game could've beaten the original.

And as a footnote, since I've installed myself over at TRF, I've found a fantastic thread detailing ALL the trigger points for ALL the enemies of TR2. Most of the enemies in the game (95%+) can be completely avoided. Which is brilliant! Shame Eidos didn't/doesn't have anywhere near the same coverage of the old-skool Raiders.

What you've actually done there is describe the complete opposite to a hardcore gamer.
You've described a casual gamer, the bane of my gaming life and the reason games nowadays are nothing more than 2 hour visual extravaganzas. All casual gamers want is for everything to look amazing during the 20 minutes they can be bothered to play a game. No hardcore gamer worth their weight would ever judge a game by its visuals.

I thought I was the only one that did not care for TR2. :$
The main thing that I did not care for was the music, it was just not as good as TR1 & TR3. One of the only things I did like was one of the last levels... umm *Thinks* Floating Islands. :D

I have been arguing with my lil bro for a few days now, about how bad the graphics are on TR1. He says the games is bad because of 'em. ^o) He's being his normal pain in the neck.

Anyway,I would have to say my favorite Tomb Raider's are TR1, TR3, & TR:LR I can't remember TR:C. :$ I'm about to play it for my self after I'm through replaying TR1. :D I only watched dad play TR:C... and I can't remember much. :$

And the post preview is not working right. *Checks codes* :-/

@ Spong. You may be right. I was drawn into a thread many moons ago on another gaming forum about this whole "Hardcore" thing and the general consensus was that a lot of harcore gamers were actually tagging themselves as experts when in fact a great many were admitting to casting a perfectly good game aside because they didn't have the tenacity and/or patience to see it through.

What I should have written in fact was 'Some self-titled "Hardcore" gamers...'

@ Tessa. Yep the graphics do appear a bit glitchy by todays standards but they can be improved upon - even just by the click of a button on the PC but it does make a difference. But then for it's time they were considered very good quality, in spite of the comparative low proportion of polygons to today's games.

Oh...but nothing can quite change the fact that three things about TR1'a Lara look a bit "pointy". One is her nose.....

I have to agree with Lo's review as TR2 was my first game as well. After the first five minutes of gameplay, I was hooked.
Spong is also correct, there were a bit too many henchmen to deal with, but because the game never really involved any tombs, I didn't much mind it.
One of the levels that I really enjoyed was with the snowmobile. I had hours of fun just riding around on it, they just don't make Raider games like that anymore.
Regardless of all the hype over the new-gen games, they are nowhere near as much fun as the originals were.

Exactly, I agree with you.
TR2 was my first TR game aswell, maybe too many gunfights but I love it.

I will (re)play TR1 in my PS3 now. Haven't played that for ages :$

Hi, Randy,

I decided to paste my review into my new site, I have sold TR2 to myself all over again

I didn't actually feel there were too many henchmen and you did have the advantage of hearing their presence, largely. The heavy breathing was a good indication, lol!

Also, I found Lara very easy to manouevre in the early games, so avoiding a lot of bullets wasn't too difficult. The controls were better aligned on the keyboard too, unlike the default keys for later games.

Goodness, I nearly started a riot. I've got to be careful about what adjectives are used...

I'm sorry Spong. If I offended you in any way, just tell me. I can warn myself not to use "hardcore" too loosely.
But could you post/PM the link of that cool website you mentioned? I've played some of TR games multiple times and yet I still can't get all of the secrets!

*Yawns* I knew I should have read this before to many peeps posted.
Hope this post is not to cruddy, I'm tired. lol

The main reason I play TR, is to get away from all of the non stop shooting. I hate that. ^o)
Edit:
Now I want to stop, because that's all TR is anymore. TR2 is by far not my favorite game, because of the music, and the constant blood shed.

I like the puzzles, they make me think. Shooting just hurts my fingers.

Now when it's not just henchmen, and it's mummys and so on, that's okay.
It dose have that tombish atmosphere. :D
