I was just browsing about IGN when I came across a thread about TR selling figures. I linked to the original page on Kotaku and some of them were pretty surprising. Obviously the later TRs aren't going to match up to the first TR game. But it was kinda surprising to see that AoD sold better than TR:A (it tied with Chronicles - lowest selling game in the franchise). TR:U somehow got the trend to go up around the same space as AoD, which was exactly what I expected and it's now interpreted in game units. Some analysts are thinking that this chart may show some of the hits and misses of the TR franchise and with Toby Gard as the head of the project again (YAY! Thank you Spong for showing the good news), TR9 might show a further improvement. What do you think? http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/kotaku/2009/04/tomb_raider_sales_chart.jpg Kotaku also did SquareEnix's figures, but it's not as informative as TR's figures. It just displays the top 3 franchises they've made and the # of units sold internationally. Final Fantasy (obviously) has the most units sold at 85 million units followed by Dragon Quest at 47 million units. DQ sold pretty well even though there's not that much exposure of the series here in the US unless some people are willing to go very in-depth to get a copy. Kingdom Hearts is the third highest selling series at 12 million units. Expect that figure to change soon because the DS game Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is coming out this September in the US and this October internationally. A little note to KH fans - if you've been hearing about a character named Xion, she's in this one. She's rumored to be the 14th member of Organization 13. But that can't be confirmed until the game's translated. As for PSP's Birth By Sleep, the date's still TBA. But beta-testers are giving this game a thumbs-up. |

This is an informative post and the numbers are surprising but I can't help feeling somewhat skeptical after seeing the supposed concept art and reading the proposed storyline. At first we all were excited about SE taking the reigns, but now I'm not so sure. First she loses the manor and now she loses a yacht? Instead of being a Tomb Raider, she will be a survivalist. What direction are they trying to take here? This may might turn off Tomb Raider fans and send the numbers into a nose dive. If that should happen, from a financial stand point, I see it being something very difficult to recover from. I sincerely hope I'm wrong about this but, it's just a feeling I'm getting. |

Then again, TR9 takes place her early years. This was during her rough times when she had to rely on her research to make a living and she was shunned from the Croft family after her father's disappearance so she didn't inherit the riches and the estate (if SE's following the TR:L bio). Most people may not know those bio changes, but in a way you're right. It may help people who were isolated from the franchise to be initiated, but it wouldn't satisfy the tastes to the already-initiated. It's still a bit early in the game and SE's the type that likes to bring surprises, especially to audiences in the US and Europe. Edited by Singstar90210, Aug 22 2009, 07:45 PM.

Yes, it's still early on so there's no sense getting worked up over something that's not chiseled in stone. |

Yep. After all, if CD and SE's not going to keep this as tight-lipped as TR:U, they've gotta be coming up with something bigger than they're letting on. I've pretty much gotten used to SE's style - leak out a bit of info and give a probable back story, emerge with a game with just as much (or way more) dazzle than the concepts. But I still think that if these ideas were given a bit earlier or during the Core days, probably this would've gotten a bigger reaction than right now. Maybe because there's so many TR games that each one of us has a certain unique image of Lara. |

I'm not familiar with SE's style or design. I'm worried that the whole TR atmosphere will be lost because they want to paint it red while we are used to seeing it in blue. |

Makes sense to have jitters. Hopefully Toby Gard would try and preserve the essence now that he's in a higher position. |
